Howdy everyone,

This looks like a knowledgeable site, I happened across it by chance when I was doing some Google searching on "motorized bicycle's" I didn't know there was such a following, I'm not new to motorized bikes, I bought a couple of them a few years ago, the electric cheap ones, they lasted a grand total of two camping trips before I got rid of them, they just fell apart, so I traded them off for some camping gear.

With the gas prices they way their going, I started thinking again about a motorized bike, I'm not new to bikes, I used to be into mountain biking, I've had Treks and Gary Fishers, but as I start to age, (45 now) I'm starting to think that there has to be an easer way, or a cheaper way to get around, whether it's a commute to work, or a fun afternoon just cruising around, or exploring the countryside on some of the camping trips I take, or maybe having something I can take in the boat and have something to ride when I moore at different destinations (I want to go explore the San Juan's this summer) so I thought that maybe I should be looking into building a motorized bike.

I've been snooping around the forums here for a couple of days, done some reading, lots of google searches, shopping on ebay, ect. ect. ect. And all that searching keeps bringing me back here.

I was going to buy one of the engine kits they sell on ebay, but after doing some reading, I'm finding that there's better and more reliable ways to go, I've been shopping over at "small engine Warehouse" thanks to a link I found here, and have been eye balling the Honda GXH50.

Once I get my ducks in a row, (and it looks like I have a few ducks to line up) I'll start another thread on "the build" not sure yet what I'm going to do, or exactly what I want, so I'm in for some more reading. I'll be asking questions as I go, and it looks like you folks know your stuff, so I'll be drilling for answers, and share what I know along the way.

I'm not new to forums, but I am new to this one, just to give you a little back ground, I do have some varied hobbies, I belong to a camping forum, a Jeep forum, a model airplane forum, and a boating forum, I enjoy all these hobbies, so I'm equally excited about building a motorized bike.

one more thing I left out, I'm in Oregon, I think that should just about cover the introduction :)

Thanks for a great site, Stuart

G'day man and welcome to MBc.
Good choice the GXH50...compare prices to Staton and maybe a few other suppliers(also factoring-in freight)

Small Engine Warehouse wants $210 for the motor plus something like 15 or 20 bucks shipping, unless I find one cheaper, I may order one next week, my thought was to get the engine and mounting kit, then go find a bike that it fits without a lot of modification, I'm not sure yet if I'll go with a new or used bike, I'm sure I can find a pretty cheap used bike around here fairly easily, we have a very active craigslist here in town, I've bought a lot of stuff off there, everything from cars and campers to boats and camping gear, so I'm sure with a little looking, I can come up with just the right bike.

And thanks for the welcome, I've found that having a forum to turn to on any project, where people are reading that have like interests in these things, helps a lot, I've been able to get my neck out of hot water a number of times when it comes to boat issues, I'll go to the boating forum, post my question, and there's always someone there to walk me through every step of the way in getting the problem fixed, I sense that this forum will be the same way, so I'm pretty happy to have found it. When you get all this knowledge together, figuring out ways to do things comes pretty easy, so these forums are a good thing. it's the same way with my Jeep, plus you can find the best deals on stuff to, so it always pays to reasearch things out before you just dive in with both feet, I have a lot more reading ahead of me before I take on this project, but so far, I think I'm headed in the right direction.

I was noticing that, I think the QXA has a bigger shaft, I was going to ask about that, I've read where people have been using the QHA with the adapter kits (I think I saw that somewhere through a google search) I was going to ask if that bigger shaft would adapt up to the gear case that comes with the adapter kits.
