i figured i would be the 1st to post here, because, i want to ask a question. i just bought a 4 stroke. i neeed to know what to look out for. (cans of worms issues, like the happytimes have issues with the intake gaskets.) i just bought this engine http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=190214177567&Category=42319&_trksid=p3907.m29 i think it is the equavilant of dax's rack mount titan??? but, i just ordered about 30 min agao, and i want to know what too look out for. thanks guys! i am a 4 stroke noob (for the bikes)

Well Tater that kit is the suppliers answer to the Grubee kit. I'm getting one myself soon on trial. It has a couple of things that are better than the Grubee kits - firstly it comes with a set of cranks that don't necessitate replacing your bottom bracket; secondly, they include a strap for holding the muffler to the frame that looks as if it has been designed for the purpose and appears to be of reasonable thickness. Apart from that it has the same chain tensioner -they make big about it being on roller bearings but the spindle is the same soft chinese crud that strips when the nut is tightened.
It uses the old HT tank which looks better than the tank that comes with the Grubee kit but probanly has a smaller capacity. The silencer is of the chapest HT type that holds the muffler in with 2 crud screws that like to come out and leave the muffler tube lying on the road. You'll need to carry spare screws taped onto the bike. I'm certain that it is the Huang Shen motor that Grubee uses so that is probably sort of OK. The gearbox was the difficult part for them to produce. For patenting reasons they couldn't rip off the Grubee gearbox because that is made in China and will be protected by patent - if was made in the US they's have ripped it straight off. They don't include in pictures of the inside of the gear box and I think we all know why.
That is the main draw backand I'll soon find out about it because I'll be getting one on triall. I'm not expecting much from the gearbox but if they've made it to fit the HuangShen then it should be able to fit the Grubee that is made for the same engine. That's what I think but I wouldn't go on anything they say. The tray that holds the engine its hard to see if it is made well enough but you can be sure that the bolts and studs that are attached to it will all need to be replaced with non-chinese steel ones but that is no worse than the Grubee kit. I think the engine and the pedal cranks and sprocket are OK but the rest of it is the same old crud that only the Chinese know how to make. Oh yes, I don't trust the machining of the drive sprocket and the photo shows the chain looking uncomfortable on it. The chain could be faulty as well and I'd always recommend throwing the chain out and using a Yaban 415 or a KMG freestyle extreme for a BMX bike.

What to look for

Hi Tater,

I bought this kit last year. I have it on a 15 year mountain bike frame and had no problems. Your church bike looks good but the three piece wide pedal crank that comes with the kit will not fit your bike. My kit came with the old style JL Hoot tranny. This tranny was problematic because the straight cut gears were noisy. The solution was to put gear oil in since the tranny did have fill and drain plugs. However, the oil would spray out of the vented fill plug unless you ran the tranny almost dry which would increase gear noise and make for rough clutch action. Your improved version has angle cut gears for the clutch gear and the big ring gear but they eliminated the fill and drain plugs. Liquid gear oil will probably give the best consistent lubrication and thus noise reduction but it will be difficult to do unless you duplicate the old style tranny fill and drain plugs. Then you will have the oil spray problem, unless you do what I did. This mod stops oil spray completely. I use 75W-90 synthetic gear oil (about 6 ounces). I'm still experimenting with the final amount. Another help for gear and engine noise is dropping the original rear sprocket to a 36T. This keeps the revs in the "sweet spot" at about 25-30 mph cruising. This engine uses a 15 mm output shaft versus the Honda's 16 mm output. That's why the trannys are not interchangeable depending on the engine. I like the Huasheng engine and have had no problems. Starts every time and 4 strokes have the forced air cooling which helps reliability. If you have any questions, feel free. Here's some pictures of the anti-spray mod. Just a baffle made with sheet metal and pop rivets. I also supplied a before shot (the greasy one).
