Howdy all,
I actually posted on this forum way back, maybe 2 years ago, with a pic of an old Monark frame with 47cc Tanaka mounted over the rear wheel, golden eagle style with a few tweaks of my own. I've been using it for work commuting regular, but am a bit tired of mixing gas and wanted a frame mounted 4 stroke engine that was reliable. I do enjoy having to assist the engine from a start as the 2 stroke doesn't have the power at the low end, and i also race road bicycles.
Found Quenton here and ordered an engine from him that he had done some of his special work on. He has been so helpful and i'll probably have more questions. Using the Monark frame as the other old schwinn frames didn't have enough room, maybe the new engines are a little bigger, or maybe it's the ambassador engine.. does have an area for electric starter.
Anyway, I finished brazing the mounts and enforcing the tubing joints at the bottom bracket. Dog-legged the crank today, have a ten lb hammer that i call the persuader, even cherry red it was a b#%&@! well it's in the correct plane now and i pedaled it up and down the street. I can't tell you how it feels to sit on this ride now, maybe like i could sit here all day!
Just a note: the standard whizzer bottom mount doesn't fit all bikes. I layed it in level after grinding it to fit against the bottom bracket (like a standard whizzer) and it was all at the wrong angle and had to add another length of steel. Ordered Fat Franks in cream from schwalbe tires $$. It will have a much bigger tank that will tunnel as a regular mc tank. If you are interested, the rims are the kind. Velocity cliffhangers, no rivets so you can drill them out for 12 gauge and plenty strong. 60$ each.
Should i paint it? I kind of like the rough look, may i won't even recover the seat. ha. Did buy one of those repro monark forks that will need much work for this service. The bike must weigh 80lbs..
thanks for reading, i'm pretty obsessed i know.
