Chain Tensioner Getting away from the tensioner...

How much play do I need before I need a tensioner? After installing the chain from my old Suburban to the Point beach, there is NO play at all. My thinking is to cut the chain, put in a spacer or insert and leave it alone. Right now it's so tight I KNOW it would wear out the bearing at the motor. But just enough to give it a tad bit of play?

Any ideas?

if it is the kit chain...it WILL stretch :D
I believe the rule of thumb is 1/2" deflection up n down is the right tension

I ride with no tensioner. I just cut the chain to a length that it's tight (about 1/2" play) with the axle backed up almost to the back of the dropout. Pulling the wheel back by hand gets me there. One day I'll try a ghost sprocket, but it isn't a huge priority. Bike rides just fine as is.

I kinda think since its a 3 yearold chain I've got all the stretch out of it. I think maybe just one link adding one more will do it perfectly.
