My Dog got Sprung!- and other cool stuff.

So,- been awhile since my last post, but it doesn't mean I haven't been busy working on my dog!

HERE'S WHERE IT'S AT NOW!

10 point scale for the latest upgrades:

Springer front end: 8 POINTS
The ride just became much more enjoyable knowing I can ride in comfort w/out having to stress out looking for and avoid the smallest little ripple in the road.
It really does work!
Pretty easy install compared to what I read it would be like.
I needed to fabricate a spacer to go between the top of the front fork adjustment nut and the bottom of the springer mount. - no biggie. c-pic
Drilled the front to attach the support bars for the front fender.-c-pic
Brake was a little tricky. Needed to take off the front support bars to fit them into the workable space.-c-pic
YOU WILL NEED TO USE NEW BRAKES. The KMC brakes have the welded gussets on each side of the fork. You will need to purchase side pull WIDE brakes. Make sure they will fit around the fender - many do not.

2 into 1 brake lever: 9 POINTS
Best thing on the bike! -c-pic
No more freaking out making sure I pulled the brake or the clutch lever by mistake.
easy install, and looks really clean on the bike.
You just need to make sure you get an even pull using the adjustment nuts.

Double kickstand: - 8 POINTS
AWESOME!! - get one. - supercool to work on the bike. It lifts the front or the rear up for easy maintenance. And it keeps the bike absolutely secure. No more worries about the bike falling over from displaced weight.
easy fit - requires same size allen wrench to remove the original stand.
rubber tips tend to fall off - hot glued them on.

replaced push button clutch - it works now

Drink holder: - 6 POINTS
Found this at my local bike shop. Mounts to the front bar! Still need to find the right color coordinated water bottle.
I needed to add additional rubber in the clamp to help it fit the narrow handle bars.

Schwinn comfort seat:- 8 POINTS
Takes a little getting used too. But after that, it is fantastic for long rides. I will never go back to the standard seat for a cruiser bike.

other previous mod's:
relocated gas tank
springer engine mount
roller clutch cable wheel
angle bracket brace on the front fender
re-welded exhaust muffler - no need to clamp it
engine and accessories painted black

Future mod's:

black powder-coat the springer front end
run wires through the frame

build a stretch limo bike

Nope, I ordered it through my local bike shop. I don't recall the manufacturer, but it looked well made. I had no hesitation about installing it. It was normally $56.00, but he took $40.00 since I ordered other parts from him, and that's what retailers on this site sell the front fork for.
I know it's not a Schwinn though. I also recall it was a "made in America" company.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time and planning for how I wanted to build my bike.
The goal was to make it look like it was factory purchased.
And be built as safe as well.
I did a lot of reading on this site to learn from the experience of others about the weaknesses and faults on the KMC. And w/ that knowledge, came up w/ ideas on how to overcome them.

You might want to turn the fork spring bolt in enough to put a nut on the back, or at least get some Loctite on the threads. I've had that bolt work itself loose on a non-motorized bike, the vibration of an "HT" is bound to shake that puppy loose!

Still like'n the stickers. I'm sure I will eventually get tired of them, but not yet. Might create something on my own that still has the Moondog theme.

I have a friend up the street w/ a garage full of pieces of bike frames. He makes all sorts of unique street machines out of them. We just used a cut off wheel on a seat post frame, and that was all there was to it. I cut it to 3/4" in height, and it worked it perfect.

With the addition of the Springer fork, and the sprung engine mount I made(c pic), I really don't have much vibration on the bike at all now. But I rarely go over 30 mph on it either.
Also, it's already Loctited, but thanks. I have just enough threads showing to be able to reverse a nyloc on them. So if that fell off, it would be a good warning that it's un-threading. Might try that.



OK - so I did buy a couple more accessories. It's getting darker in the morning when going to work, so I ordered the classic bullet chrome light and tail light kit w/ the generator from Spooky tooth.
I'm also 6'3", so I figured I would give an angled seat post a try to get a little more leg room.
