Hey my fellow motorbikers! I am changing out the one piece crank on a cruiser frame and all has gone well except for one thing. I can't seem to loosen the nut that holds the sprocket onto the crank arms. It looks like I might need a special tool in order to do this.

Any tips, comments, suggestions?

I've included some pictures to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with. Thanks in advance for all the help!

Or clamp it is a vise (or just hold it down some way), get a big flat screwdriver and a hammer and tap it to the left to unscrew it. Put the scredrive blade in that notch- hold the scredriver to the side as far as you can- so that it is pointing in the way you want to unscrew, not pointing at the center of the crank, and tap, tap, tap.

Ahh... left hand thread. Most everything else was left hand threaded as well, but I wasn't sure about this nut too. Well, I'll try the ol' hammer and screwdriver method first. I've ordered a complete set of pro tools and a stand from Nashbar. I do a lot of road biking and have kept putting it off, but it's finally time to anty (sp?) up. Thanks guys for help!

OK- you are right- reverse thread- it's been months since I have had one off, but that makes sense (must have had a small stroke....not the first time).

Soooo- everything I said, but tap to the right.

The tool you need there is called a Lock Ring wrench/spanner and you also need to be aware the the threads are Left Hand Threads http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=25&item=HCW-5

The information about the left hand threading on the one piece crank set above is incorrect! The threads on the left side/sprocket side are right hand threads. The threads on the right side of the crank are left hand threads. I hope my error did not cause to much trouble.

Thanks for all your help guys. I figured I'd post a couple of pics here to let you know how it turned out. The bottom bracket was filthy and the bearing needed to be repacked so I'm glad I decided to replace the front sprocket.

Still waiting for my durn staton/GXH50 kit to come in...

What do you think?
