I'll be installing my first kit soon. Unfortunately the donor bike has open shift & brake cables along the top tube. I'd rather not move the brake & shift cables from their original locations.

Do you all have any tips for mounting the gas tank while maintaining the cables on top of the top tube?

Not sure what others have done but I wondered about this myself. I was thinking of using some short pieces of small diameter (like flared brake line) tubing around the open cable and clamping the tank strap around those. This would allow you to tighten the tank down without crimping the cable. Downside would be having to unthread all the cables to run them through the tubing pieces. Anyways, Just a thought, probably sounds better than it would look.

I'm still waiting on my kit, and I can't find any pictures showing what the mount looks like. So, it may or may not be a problem for me unless the tank lies directly on top of the tube.

I was thinking about doing what you've suggested. But instead of re-threading everything, just cutting a slit down the tube so it can be slipped over the cable. Or just repositioning them below the tube with zip ties and sliding the mount underneath them.

Mines the same. I got 3x M6 nuts, wound them onto a bolt and attacked them with the flapwheel on my angle grinder till they were in half. So with 3x half nuts I placed them over the cables where the rear tank mount is and used kneadit (metal) which if you dont have it in the states is a epoxy playdoh. Sets as hard as steel to mould over the top of them. Once it was set it acted as a neat unobtrusive way to provide a tunnel for the cables. the front tank mount clamps over the cable guides at the front. Worked well on 2 bikes now.

A much simpler solution is to get new cables and sheaths that run from the bars directly to the the brake or derailleur and just bypass the open section on the top tube all together. Then I just cut the little cable mounts off the top tube and mount the tank.

All I did was make sure the cable didn't get inside the clamp bracket when mounting. You should be able to slip the bracket between the frame tube and the cable so it is unaffected/jammed.

where did you get the intake with the bend in it:confused::confused::confused:i want one wait take that back i need one

I made it. I cut the intake with a hacksaw, slipped on a 90 degree copper plumbing elbow, and used some cold weld (jb-weld, etc) to glue it :)

Have done many miles on it since, no problems.
