Registration of vehicles operated in this state; exceptions; temporary operation of certain vehicles without registration, when. (a) Every owner of a motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer intended to be operated upon any highway in this state, whether such owner is a resident of this state or another state, or such motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer is based in this state or another state shall, before any such vehicle is operated in this state, apply for and obtain registration in this state under the provisions of K.S.A. 8-126 to 8-149, inclusive, and acts amendatory thereof or supplemental thereto, except as otherwise provided by law or by any interstate contract, agreement, arrangement or declaration made by the director of vehicles.

Does this mean unless I'm driving on the highway I do not need to register?

The info you had on your post for KS. I took it that you do not need to register or have insurance. As long as you start off with a bicycle and keep the pedals on and working, you can add a 130cc or less engine and up to 3.5hp . Then all you need is just a drivers license and keep it under 30mph. That's how I took it.:D
The part I don't understand is the engine. How can a person have a 130cc engine and be under 3.5hp? Or do you go with one or the other, get a 130cc stamped engine or a 3.5hp stamped engine?

yeah im not quite sure on the post you had, i think it basically says that "Every owner of a motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer intended to be operated upon any highway in this state, whether such owner is a resident of this state or another state, or such motor vehicle, motorized bicycle, trailer or semitrailer is based in this state or another state shall, before any such vehicle is operated in this state, apply for and obtain registration in this state under the provisions of K.S.A. 8-126 to 8-149."

But some other ones say that "1) "Motor vehicle" means any vehicle other than a motorized bicycle which is self-propelled and is required to be registered under the provisions of article 1 of chapter 8", which makes it sound like it doesn't have to be registered.

So im not really quite sure. sorry

heres the page i got those from: http://www.oquin.com/msc/MB_StatutesPage10.html

"intended to be operated upon any highway in this state"
I'm not going to drive a motorized bicycle on the highway. Just around town.

oh ok

ok sorry i didnt know that. i have to drive about a mile on a highway to get to town but i dont think im going to register it. just for that 1 mile. if i have to i'll just pedal that mile. so no you shouldn't have to register it. if i were you i would print off some of those statutes just in case you do get pulled over.
