Hi, I'm just researching to figure out what kind of motor to buy for my Bianchi mountain bike. I commute 6 miles round trip to work and my drivers licence is suspended.

suspended

not to be a wise-acre, but if johnnylaw knew the rules and stopped you, you'd be on the hook for operating a vehicle w/o a license. btw, from a cycling roadie that enjoys the pedal commute you mention, its easy without an engine. totally flat, you're young, why not? except it does get windy sometimes and hey it's kinda fun with an engine. if you gotta sit and not pedal i would get a very quiet belt drive. golden eagle sells one. w.

Re: suspended

You're right, although the law is written so awkwardly that it's easy to think it allows gas-powered motorized bikes. I have a license-suspended friend who was stopped on one. The cop was going to give him a ticket, but called to see how to write it up, and whoever he called said the motor was legal. I called DMV myself and talked to an officer to make sure. He referred me to the specific law and told me it was legal. But if you read it very carefully, the only motor that is legal without a license is an electric.

I gave up on the motor idea and make the commute regularly now, no problem. On super windy or rainy days it's a pain. But I'm in better shape now and some chronic knee pain I had has miraculously disappeared!
