DOT helmets (and full-time F&R lighting) also serve to placate the law/rescue workers, it could mean the difference between keepin' on or not. in the several thousands of miles we've logged in OP, the only time a rider's gotten pulled over was when his tail-light had blown on a dark rainy night.
you can ebay a nice "shorty" DOT helmet for $30-$40.
