I may buy this kit http://www.staton-inc.com/Details.asp?ProductID=3186

unfortunately Staton website is ridiculously unclear on price which is one reason I dont buy their chain drive kits.

Ok so that "kit" is $529 plus what?

the hub?
The wheel?
how much is the hub?
how much for a full wheel? $77?
Is there more than one sprocket option?
Can I choose the number of teeth on the sprocket?

http://www.staton-inc.com/Details.asp?ProductID=3173 is this the wheel I need? Does it come with a chain? or does the chain come with the kit?

So assuming its 529 + 77 + shipping. I'm looking at $650 maybe? Don't tell me to call Dave, I tried that last summer and he was too busy to answer a couple of simple questions so he lost a sale. Honestly he should have one or the other: a really clear website or good customer service on the phone...he has neither.

I just want someone who has bought the kit to tell me what I need and how much it will cost.

I've bought one outside-drive, a front friction drive and rear friction drive kits from Staton.

You are correct. His website needs work.

First you order the kit selling from $499-$769.

Then you order the hub:

I bought a friction drive kit for $650 + shipping so nearly $700, but I knew what was coming.

BTW that kit has under 100 miles on it and is for sale if anyone wants it, I'll post it up soon.

Thats ridiculous, why would I want the kit unless I had the hub? Why seperate the two? Should I wait weeks for my kit to arrive only to discover I dont have a complete kit? then wait weeks more for my hub to arrive....then.....

Secondly I bought this hub: http://www.bicycle-engines.com/solid-sprocket-axle-wbrake-p-298.html with left side freewheel and it isn't threaded for a standard mountain bike freewheel on the right. Its threaded for a single gear freewheel on the pedal side like on BMX bikes!

How do I know what kind of freewheel I can use on Statons hub? Do I need to then turn around and buy a special freewheel from him. I dont want a single speed I want to use the 6-8 gear freewheels on mountain bikes.

So the hub is $130 and the kit is $530 thats $660 + shipping (700?) plus the price of having the hub laced? Maybe 50-100 more so I'm looking at 750-800 for the lowest priced Staton inside chain drive kit.

thats a lot different than 530 + shipping....

thanks for your reply.

Twalker,

I've not actually bought a kit from Staton but here is how I read/understand the kit. I believe it does include his rear hub, (probably a 36 hole hub) but it is up to you to have a local bike shop lace it into your existing rear wheel. I believe that he only has the one size Left hand threaded SS freewheel. All of the reduction necessary is designed/provided by the gearbox. As to number of speeds available to you on the Right side of the hub? Any of the multi speed Freewheels currently being offered can be made to fit on the Staton hub. The most common being 7-speed. You can also put any of these multi speed freewheels on your Grubee Hub buy flipping the axle and adding a spacer or two to the right hand side. Alaskavan used the Grubee hub with a multispeed freewheel on his Tadpole Trike. He put up a thread on how to flip the axle with some really clear photos of the steps. You also might want to send a PM to detonatortunning to get feed back from someone who has bought one of the Staton Kits recently (within the last 6 months)

One other bit of information: In the bicycle industry the Italian/European 35mm X 1 threading for freewheels and Bottom Brackets are considered interchangeable with the American Threading of 1.375 X 24. Because of this all freewheels currenty available are made with American Threading 1.375 X 24.

Ok thats good info scully. I don't get Staton, he makes an incredible product, he has a fairly well done site, but he misses the most important thing a picture of exactly what I get for my money.

It's like trying to make love to a woman without foreplay, Im the customer (woman) at least give me a kiss before I pull out my money. Show me I'm not just getting F****........ Its important!

So the hub comes with the kit and then the $77 wheel is for that hub to be laced by him and sent to me? Sounds logical.

On the Grubee axle thats interesting, Ill check that out. But I don't see turning it over as I bought it so it would work as is with drive sprocket and brake on left side. My 7 gear freewheel on the right does thread about halfway down and my BMX sprocket threads fine on it.

But hey thats all good info...thanks.

The kit I bought (inside drive 33cc robin)came with the hub,and his standard bracket, plus struts/legs/suport things what ever you call the braces. And a bag if bolts.I tossed the bracket and built my own. Also re-worked the braces. One thing he doesn't say but should is you can get your chose of axels for a 5speed freewheel spacing or for a single speed freewheel spacing.Tell him which one you want .

The STATON right-side threads on their hubs will fit a standard mountain bike freewheel sprocket cluster.

I just put one of their 24" Plastic tuff-wheels on my bike, and my 6-speed sprocket cluster from my old spoke wheel fit perfectly. I didn't want to bother with spokes and hubs, and bending rims, and for nearly the same price as their spoked wheels, ($80) you can get a 24" plastic wheel with the hub inside. (my bike is a 26 inch, but the smaller, stronger 24" wheel is worth it, just change the rear brakes)

However, the left custom threads don't seem to fit standard left-thread bike freewheels according to the bike shop, so I highly recommend getting the proper STATON left freewheel or sprocket to fit properly.

BTW, order the metric nuts for the hub, as Staton does NOT provide them with their hubs/wheels, and a regular standard bike nut will NOT thread on! M10 1.0mm nuts from autoparts store fixed that for me, but I was still pizzed that they don't include them and without mention!

Good luck with your bike and happy riding!
