Better Brakes For Whizzers

What can I do to upgrade braking performance?

After months of neglect sitting in an open lot, "The Whizzard", my 2006 Whizzer bike ran for 25 miles almost flawlessly. However, brakes aren't up to par.

Please help.

:unsure:I'm gonna try to hang a side-pull vee brake in the rear until I hear of something better.

The upgraded drum brake works 10 times better than the band brake. It is also a direct replacement. However the drum brake also has sub par performance when compared to modern day brakes found on mountain bikes. The coaster brake hub is another option to consider but is likely to have reliability issues due to poor quality components and susceptibility to inadvertent activation of the coaster brake on a motorized bike that you merely rest your feet on the pedals.

Hope this helps

So this upgraded drum brake is available from Whizzer vendors?

I have the band brake; the chain sprocket is freewheeling without coaster brake.

How about the front brake? Can that be upgraded?:geek:

Is your bike equipped with the auto-clutch or the manual (slip) clutch?
If you have the auto-clutch, you may already have the rear drum. My initial thought is to check the brakes. Because it had been sitting out in the elements for so long, you might want to take the wheels off and service the brakes. This means cleaning, re-lubing and readjusting. If you are unsure how to do this, then perhaps take the wheels to a qualified bike shop to have them check them out.
Also, is there any play in the brake cables? When you pull the brake lever(s), is there much travel before the brakes start to engage? Maybe they need to be tightened up a bit.

Sounds as though you have the band brake. The band brake was the worst brake I have ever seen. After adjustment it was poor at best and in less than 100 miles the friction band had broken free of one of the rivets and bound up the rear wheel. I found the Whizzer OE drum brake to work reasonably well at the sub 30 MPH range. The combination of the two brakes seemed adequate for the intended sub 30 MPH use. Neither brake demonstrated stellar performance on its own. I can say that my personal experience showed that with use the shoes seemed to become more efficient or better said as having better shoe to drum contact.

Yes Whizzer upgraded the band brake to a drum brake on their newer NE-5 models. I think the change was implemented in 2007. It is available through dealers or Whizzer.

I spoke to the local bike dealer; he asked me to leave "Mr. Whizzard" with him for a week. I don't really want to do that, so leaving just the wheels is a good option.

Kep1a, the previous owner said it was the band brake. It seems too small to be a drum brake.

The cables seem to be adjusted well.

I just drilled the carb's phenolic spacer; that really woke the engine up. More engine mods will be done soon.

Looking for Whizzer front disc brake and rear drum brake.

Whizzer Brakes

Hello, I and other have the improved 2-shoe in stock, and YES it does interchange I have done it a few times myself. It has far more stopping power than the band.

No such thing as a logical disk brake front for NE5. The Ambassador front end is not a direct swap either.
