I support the philosophy that people have died fighting so we don't have to carry ID cards etc but the public expense of treating unnecessary injuries caused by failure to wear helmets and seat belts sort of overules the freedom philosophy idea.
My helmet was written off in my accident last January and I dread to think of what might have happened if I hadn't been wearing it.

I am a HUGE supporter of protective gear....and a helmet has saved my life on one of my motorcycle accidents. Wear gloves and a helmet (DOT approved motorcycle helmet) AT LEAST folks.....hitting that big grinding wheel beneath your wheels with bare skin will HURT!

yes -- years ago here in Calif the law did not require the wearing of helmets

I tore a large piece from my head

with a helmet I would have walked away from the accident

instead of a major doctor visit -- more stitches than one could count

ride the MB THING with a helmet

Had to add to this. Im a newbie, just finished my DACS/ Diamond back 2 weeks ago. Was pedaling down the alley and thinking i was yanking in the new clutch lever accidently yanked my front brake lever, HARD!. Ive made some changes in the positions of every control on my bike since...Yea, it still hurts ( boy it hurts), and that was a week ago...Im resolved to always wearing a helmet and GLOVES!. Also being over 50 it hurts like **** to catapult yourself off your bike at 20 mph. Cant imagine what 40 would do...Ouch!..

Oh, man..... it wouldn't have occurred to me without this reminder.

Sounds like a good practice to make sure that the clutch and the brake (front at least) are applied by two different hands.

Thanks for the heads-up.

It's possible to go down on a bike at nearly any speed, and depending what's in the vicinity (curb, rock, light pole, etc.) you could do some serious damage, even at 5 mph. Life altering damage...

Wear the helmet. My wife worked at a head trauma (non)recovery facility for several years. Some of the stories she's told me do nothing but reinforce my own thoughts on the matter. It's just not worth it to go riding without a helmet, at any speed...

After my spill i went online and found a brake lever that controls 2 cables at once. I installed it on the right handlebar and readjusted my brakes so the front brake grabs at 50% (approx.) of the stopping power of the back brake. Works excellent so far. The Left lever is for clutch only and the right lever when really yanked hard will skid back tire and the front tire grabs but will not skid or lockup. I really like this setup. I get all usable stopping power without the danger of the front brake sending me headfirst into the emergency room. ( my ribs still hurt, thank god for advil.) Anyone out there found a good mod for the "C" clip clutch lever?...I took one and filed the groove for the clip deeper but the clip flopped around. Have it working with a washer but i feel its only time til the thing goes flying. I was thinking of drilling a hole thru the shaft instead and using a washer and cotter pin to keep it from flying into the trees when the clip falls off. Any other ideas??

Sorry, im new here and may be on the wrong thread for my question about modifying my clutch lever. Please members be patient with me. Feel free to refer to me as "grasshopper" ( or worse) til i get things figured out. I will learn the proper etiquette of this great website very soon, promise.

FYI. I've searched the member records, and I haven't found anyone (who's admitted to) living at Marco Island. Nor do the message searches turn up anything except this thread...
