Just thought I'd share this as a possible heads up:

Bike ran fine at higher RPMs but at lower seemed to be running too lean. The problem came on quickly. I had to constantly adjust the idle which prior to this was rock solid. I assumed there was something wrong with the carb and took this apart. Found no problem. Put it back on but the problem persisted.

Carb cleaner spray revealed that the cylinder base gasket had failed. Small opening near the front. Once identified I could even "feel" the gases on my finger when in close proximity.

Sick bike parts has a down-loadable gasket template. I made a new one out of some good gasket material I happened to have. Bike runs perfect again. I also noticed the intake gasket was on it's way out, soft and broken in one spot so I replaced this as well.

I noticed the stock gasket was very "soft" when removing it. It seems these may not be all that fuel proof and tend to deteriorate. Maybe that's why SBP has the template available. THANX SBP.

You know for about 3 weeks now I have been reading posts on this forum and contributing where I could. I think gasketing/leaks maybe the number one "can't figure out what's wrong with it" problem with these motors.

Well, once the suspicion is there any intake gasket failures, including of corse the cylinder base gasket as in my case are easily detectable by spraying carb cleaner near the suspected area with the engine running. It will die or at least stumbel.

I fell better reading all this, as I got my motor from chishill and he rebuilds the kits with new gaskets and bearings. I have only had to deal with cable problems and losing a few pices, but that would be my fault in building on the bike!

I posted a thread a while ago about "must do's" when installing a HT engine. I wish it were a sticky for new installers to read. The stock instake gasket is never used on any of my builds.

I hope you also replaced all of your studs to include, mounting, head, intake, exhaust, etc..etc..

Good luck and ride that thing!

And hat's off to SBP again. They could sell this gasket (and they probably do) but they also make the needed "info" available to those who want to DIY. Good guys.

Its nice that they have a template but all you really need to do is trace the manifold to get the gasket outline.

Is it possible to make a gasket, with a type of glue from auto parts store?Call me impatient I just hate to wait for it to arrive like a week later after ordering online via ebay.
