Friction drive mods

Hi guys! .I have a friction drive setup with a 2h.p. Tecumseh two stroke that will run forever .I was just wondering if anyone has done any mods on this type of motor .I tried to put a Boost bottle on today but When I tried to tap the plastic spacer (per the instructions ) with out a tap ,I ruined it ,so I have a new one on the way but have not done any other mods to the engine.I wonder if anyone ever tried to hook up a chain some how on one of these.Thanks!.
 
Front or rear drive? DIY or Staton, BMP, Dimension Edge or?

Sorry .I am running a Viper rear friction drive that I got from Island hopper.The only thing I dont like about it s I would like more speed of course and the friction wheel is smooth aluminum and I have to run on completely dry roads or it wont run.They do not make any other type of friction roller for this set up.I think a knurled one might work pretty good for me too.

I've been through two 2 h.p. Tecumseh engines. While they do work, if you ever try a TLE 43, you'll never look back. Not trying to rain on your parade but mods on that engine will be difficult, they aren't designed to turn the RPM to get 35 mph and I've found the torque to be less than stellar. Just a fact.
 
Thanks for the tip.I guess the thing with that engine is reliability.When it was new it took a dozen pulls to get running .Now it is broken in and starts on one to two pulss and will idle all day.Can you give me more info on the TLE engine ?.Thanks.
 
The difference in quality, performance, and noise between the Mitsubishi, Robin-Subaru and the Honda when compared to the Tecumseh is striking. The Tecumseh uses a 54mm clutch with iron friction surfaces, it slips and is very noisy whereas the aforementioned engines use 78mm clutches with friction material surfaces. They lock up better and are much smoother and quieter. The engine was designed for such applications as micro pumps, tillers and augers that operate a relative low RPM, it was not designed for sustained 7-8k operation that a bicycle on the street will require. Don't get we wrong, Tecumseh got me and the wife into motorized bicycle's, mainly due to cost. I now wish I has listened to David Staton and spent a little more up front and had more in my pocket now.
 
JMO, TLE43 Mitsubishi engines are the bomb!

On my 40-mile run yesterday I bypassed all sidewalks and bikepaths and rode down the middle of the highway (35mph speed limits). RPM range was 9400-10000.

Top speed on the flats is now 41.5mph.:devilish:

I run with cars, trucks and motorcycles. No one honks, yells, tailgates or shows their finger. JMO, it's safer than the shoulder of the road.:geek:

These engines are runnig lean and WAYYY over their redlines. Right now I'm fabbing aluminum adaptors to install high-performance carbs. Also trying to fab or find friction rollers larger than 1.5" diameter.

If I'm successful, my TLE43's will no longer run lean, and will enjoy a better life expectancy.:geek:
 
The one I have ,has a smooth spindle on it .I can go a long way on one tire due to the low heat I get from the smooth roller but I have to apply a lot of pressure or it slips.I did E mail them today to see if they offer anything differant for that set up.The spindle I have on now is about an 1"3/8 and lugs me around at about 20to 25m.p.h. and I weight about 225 with my backpack and gear.The clutch is not very smooth and I do pedal before I hit the gas.
 
Heaven ! your motor is screamin!!!!.I think mine tops out at about 8000.I do have a harbor freight store near me that has a power auger that runs for 189.00 I have heard that is a pretty good motor .It is 52cc and runs about 2H.P. or a little more.Is that a good price .If you go to Harborfreight.com and put in 95346 as the part number it has it listed as 229.00 but thats not the sale price.
