i didn't care for the black plastic air cleaner that my motor came with, so i decided to make a custom stack for the carb.
i made this stack out of an aluminum pop bottle. the original filer element is inside of it.
it took me about 15 minutes to make it.

Sweet!

It looks good and goes well with the silver engine!

Air filter mods usually gain some horsepower too!

nice mod!
i didn't like the plastic either, so i used a $5 toothbrush holder.

if ya want something in a little heavier guage, you could cut it out of a ss toothbrush holder.

Love that backyard engineering. Is that purple bike a stingray?. Nice job of fitting the engine.

I'm currently running an engine just like yours. The 50cc slant head with steel cylinder liner. Very nice little engine! How does yours run? The carb doesn't look level in your pictures. Has this messed with fuel mixture any?

i looked at those toothbrush holders this morning at wal mart actually.
the bottle that i made my stack out of is pretty thick...alot thicker than pop can.
this came from an aluminum pop bottle that you see every once in awhile at wal mart. sometimes they come with mountain dew in them or pepsi. (the bottles come painted)
the aluminum is actually pretty thick but not as thick as the toothbrush holder (which is stainless). it's low grade aluminum and it doesn't polish up like chrome, but it looks pretty good. the pop bottle cost me $1.50, and i got to drink the pop before i cut the bottle into the stack.

the engine is as level as i can get it, and yes the carb sits at a slight angle.
no, it doesn't affect the mixture at all as far as i can tell. there just isn't enough room in the 20" frame to make it sit perfectly level.
i could move the engine down a little in the back, but then i wouldn't be able to get the spark plug in and out, or the wire on and off because of clearance issues with the top bar of the frame. this would also interfere with my chrome chain guard (for the peddle chain). my motor runs great and it has plenty of power. my friend has an 80 c.c. on a 20" frame , 20 " wheels and a 41 tooth rear sprocket and when we run wide open, we are side by side the whole time. he can get me on the takeoff, but i can catch up to him shortly after we take off together.

it's a schwinn, but not an old stingray. it's one of the recent stingray knockoff frames from a couple of years ago. notice the bottom bar of the frame? it doesn't have that nice "pot-belly" curve to it like the old original schwinns did. the bottom bar has more of a straight bend in it rather than a nice curvy bend.

Yep - looks like a tight fit in that frame!
Smallest I ever built was a 24" cruiser, and the slant head barely fit when mounted so the carb was level. I like these 50cc engines better than the 66cc (80cc) engines. Sure you lose a little bit of torque, but as you mentioned, top speed is about the same. Is it my imagination or do the 50's rev a little better than the 80's?
