After a lot of tinkering on my 48cc 2stroke, I have determined that the cross shaft, that connects the clutch to the chain sprocket (through the motor) is bent. It manifested as a clutch that wouldn't release, a lot of crankcase racket and increase in visible wobble in the chain sprocket AND the clutch assembly.

Can I replace the shaft assembly without splitting the cases?

If not, I may purchase a new motor and repair the engine with the bent shaft as time allows.

I read thru Norm's teardown and buildup and it seems to indicate that the cases will need to be cleaved to repair this.

Any advice is appreciated.

Norm knows what he's doing & doesn't say anything without first hand knowledge.....pity he was seduced by the dark side of the force. :(

PS...MM,Norm is with the other MB forum.

The shaft assembly could be pushed out the clutch side after removing the chain sprocket. The culprit was a thoroughly trashed shaft bearing. Everything else looks good in there.

wheelbender, they usually include in teh kit a 2 pc threaded adapter. this adapter is the tool used to seperate the sprocket on not only teh drive chain side but the clutch plate has a nut on the other side that requires this tool to do the job correctly. AL.Fisherman will be posting a complete teardown album in a few mins/ hours. we took them this mornin on my chopper engine. they show just about every part of how to properly destroy one of these 80cc chinese jobbies. enjoy. but be patient, he likes to make arrows and things on all the pix.

I was having trouble knocking the bad bearing out of the case so I bought a bigger cold chisel and 3lb hammer. We'll see if it helps tonight.
