I rode the bus today cause it is wet and in the 30's here.
BRRRRRRRRRRR.
I miss my bike allready.

Anyone have some experience riding in the snow?

I'm looking for clothing options to keep me warm and dry.
Also i imagine even with the studded tires it could be very easy to get hurt.

I'm guessing i'll be riding this winter.
As long as i'm not smashed to pcs.

I ride all winter long, rain, snow, or otherwise. I refuse to be a cager. LOL Nokian mount and ground are great for icy roads. I have put several thousand miles on them and the studs are like new. I wear a full neoprene face mask, goggles, insulated wind and rain pants, insulated boots (to 20 below zero) and heavy ski gloves. Neck warmer, and many light layers keep out the cold. I stop every 20 minutes to warm my fingers by the exhaust. If it gets really cold, I slow down a bit to reduce the wind chill. I rode in the 30's today, and I was comfortable. I say go for it, bikes are ridable all winter long, just get good equipment.

I managed to get a nice $250 dollar dirt bike helmett for $50 bucks from the motorcyxle shop.
That helped alot with the hat situation.
I plan to buy $100 dollar articat snomobile pants soon.
The helkmett helps alot plus i'm not as worried about smashin my noggin.
I got some great fenders.
I forget what brand they are ill post it later.
The rear fender strappes onto the seatpost like a bike lock holder and the front fender has a collet that expands into the front fork.
There plastic look great and i'm positive they would break loose before they would lock up my wheel and cause a crash.
Hopefully thoose help keep me dry.

As far as being nuts.
A = 1hr in the cold and 3-4 mile walk everyday.

or 15 min mb ride in the snow and cold.

I prefer the 15 min.

The bike shop i was at will be getting the studded tires soon.
Obviously i will need them.
The guy there liked my bike so much he asked to take pictures.
Of course i let him.

I think with the proper gear.
Riding in the snow will be much fun.

But on a second note i have spent many nights riding snomobiles in the - degree weather just for fun.

My MB is my only transportatioin.
And i cannot give it up.

Im sure to hit the pavement at one point or another.
But i plan to be a fast learner.

Hopefully my bones will still be intact.

Well, I don't have my bike motored yet but ,I ride once a week during the winter IF the roads are free of ice and it is over 20 degrees and not high winds.
I wear a full face race helmet with the shield cracked a bit (to keep the fogging down. This is to keep my head warm and it works very well, add a cut down old knit cap and use it for a neck warmer.

I used those Nokians from Peter White Cycles, not one spill all winter, thousands of miles run, and run hard. Plenty of black ice and hard packed snow, the only thing I worry about are snow plows!

necessities for extremes

"layering" works...your regular wardrobe with some thermal long-johns is a good start, then add:

-full rainsuit (columbia ibex)
-waterproof gloves
-neophrene full-face mask
-waterproof hiking boots
-or, duck boots (i've been in it over the hubs, what a blast)

for ease-of-mind, you should habitualize packing the basics with you every day.

*make or purchase any small fairing, if you can keep the goggles dry you can keep riding.

*full fenders (talk about obsessing, eh?)

*real lights (12V SLA/auto-grade headlight & taillight)

*respect your bike's limitations!!

buddy, it wouldn't matter if it took the same amount of time...independance rocks...the best part about MB-commuting is knowing that the guy on the bus wishes he had the cahones you have

i agree with augi, the thing i love most about riding at this time of year and later is that NOBODY else is out there and the people in cars stay way over to the right and away from you because YOU are probably a psych case trolling for someone to go off on !?! ROTHFL

Now that i have a helmett it isn't bad at all.
I'm hoping the bike shop gets some studded tires soon.
He said they will.
I allmost can't wait for the snow now.

Trying to get my bike in top shape so no problems will arise.

How quiet are the Conti's on bare pavement? Are the studs tungsten carbide? When I bought my Nokians, I considered the 294's but Peter Whites opinion was that the Mount and Ground was a better choice for the commuter. I put several thousand miles on these tires without losing one stud, and I was surprised at how quiet they were on bare pavement, even at a 28 to 30 mph cruise speed. I'm sure I'll get another season or two out of them. They weren't cheap but I believe you should buy the best tire you can afford. Your life may be riding on it!
