Some here will probably worry about the negative press, but I just delight in this story...MBs and Christmas all in one holiday news story:

Bicyclist tries to balance tree on handlebars

December 5, 2009

BY ERIN GUERRA, POST-TRIBUNE CORRESPONDENT

PORTAGE -- A 48-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly stealing a
Christmas tree while riding his bike home from a bar.

Police said they were looking for the source of a motor noise near the tree lot at U.S. 6 and
Willowcreek Road, which was closed just after 1 a.m. Friday, when they found Phillip Menefee
balancing a fir tree across the handlebars of his bicycle. The bicycle, which had a homemade
motor and no lights, weaved as Menefee rode it north on Augusta and west on Gaston, where
police stopped it and questioned the rider.

Menefee, of Portage, reportedly told police he'd just bought the tree from the lot, run by
Mathisen Tree Farms of Greenville, Mich. When informed the lot was closed, he then insisted
he'd bought it from Sunset Lounge. Police confirmed Menefee had been drinking at that bar and
it was not selling any trees.

After he refused to take a breath alcohol test, police arrested Menefee for theft and public
intoxication.

The $40 tree, which still had its tag, was returned to its owner.

That's good. Even the drunks are in the Christmas Spirit.

Closest I ever came was years ago I hauled an 8 foot tree home in my Corvette. Took the T top off the passengers side and stuck the tree through the roof. Worked fine, but going down the expressway, I was pulled over. Cop was very cool about the whole thing. Just said it looked odd for a car to have a tree sticking out the roof. Wished me a Merry Christmas and sent me on my way.

bet that cop got a good laugh out of that too...

That story made the radio... Thanks for posting... I was wonder where it happened... Hope it wasn't one of our guy's!

For the sake of all that is good and holy- if you needed a Christmas tree, why didn't you just ask? We need to stick together and I could have spotted you a nice Scotch Pine or a Spruce of some sort.

Scotch Pine sounds great - I still don't have a tree.

... Steve (alias Menefee from Portage)

On a serious note, this guy was pretty keen. I wonder how much the $40 tree actually cost him.
