Just happened to look at the 142F instruction manual. The manual recommends using SAE 10W-30 High detergent oil. My small engine instructor, fellow shop owners/mechanic, briggs and stratton manuals etc etc have always stressed using a Non detergent 30W oil. ANY THOUGHTS:helmet:

Don't second guess the manufacturer recommendations. If they say use hi detergent, then use it.

Never use non detergent oil in a modern motor! NEVER.

Do you have an electronic copy of the 142F manual that you can forward to me? I've been having a hard time finding one.

Let me know, and I'll PM my email address to you -- and my eternal thanks!

detergent helps keep all its lil alloy bits clean and shiny. (slightly more complicated than that but yeah...) use it if recomended by the manual.

oil weight on the other hand. numbers basically indicate ranges of operating temps.

10-30...use when coldest is 10c hottest is 30c (ambient temp), middle of a desert use a 40 or 50 weight... when its below zero at times, go 0-30 etc... multigrades being preferred
