I finally did it... Attached A BMP Kit.

I finally got all the parts: a bike, a BMP kit and a Honda GX35 motor.
Since it was on sale at REI, I got a Feedback Sport Mechanic Repair Stand.
The stand is great for working on bikes.
Anyway, I assembled the bike in the house and my wife was not too happy about it. The BMP kit is very well made and easy to install. I put a cheap Cat Eye cycle computer on.
I live in the city and have no garage. I do have a storage room where I keep my bicycles and wanted to bring my new creation there.
I keep my 2005 FJR in that room for the winter. It stays outside under a Dowco cover all Summer. Getting that FJR out of that room is like launching the Queen Mary. I pulled it out today to make room for the new motorized bicycle which I can keep gassed up. Although I keep it on a Battery Tender, the five-year-old battery was dead. I had to go and buy a new battery. In the process of changing the battery, I did the usual "drop a part down the innards of the bike never to be found again". There goes the time I wanted to spend playing with my new toy! The dog wanted to go for a walk. Clients picked that time to call, the sun goes down and it's all over. I didn't even get that part that I dropped.
Since I did not get to put oil and gas in the GX35, I just peddaled around the block once before putting the bike away. Here in Massachusetts, we have to wear a DOT approved helmet when riding a motorized bicycle. It might be fine when motoring but I think it will find it strange while peddaling.
Oh well, maybe tomorrow...or the next day....or the next....

I must've bought three BMP kits. I like the housings better than their competitor because the bearings and rollers are easily replaced.:geek:

Be careful not to ride downhill with the engine off but the clutch engaged. Ya made get engine damage from that.
 
I noticed the packaging right away. Whoever packs this cares about the product. Everything about the BMP kit is first rate. The kill button they sell just is not very nice so I may replace that.

If the motor is off I will just lift the roller off the tire.

I hope to get a test ride this weekend.
 
BMP kits are bullit proof and you cant beat the price.
 
I finally took it for a test run this morning.
It's a new engine and a new kit.
The clutch rattles when it engages, is this normal?
 
I have the BMP kit as well but with the Robin/Subaru engine. I had that same rattle on mine. It rattles when you first give it gas and again when the clutch disengages. Turns out, on mine, it wasn't the clutch. It was the bearings for the drive roller. Because BMP uses slip-fit bearings, there is a slight slop and the bearings move around and cause the noise. I used high temp gasket sealant to "glue" them into place.

I pulled the roller assembly out and cleaned it up good. Then put a thin layer of gasket sealer around the lip of the bearings and then placed them back in. After that, I placed more around the bearings on the inside of the channel to give it more hold. After giving it 24 hours to dry, I went for a test ride and now all I hear is my motor purring along. Best part about this fix is that if you need to remove the bearings, you just remove the sealant and they pop right out.

Here are a couple pics to show what I did.

First, the sealant. I used high temp since it does get hot from the clutch and the friction from the roller and tire.

Almost forgot, check to make sure that your clutch drum is running true. I checked mine out and it had a wobble to it. I emailed BMP and they sent me out a new one right away. Always good to do business with a company that stands behind their products!

I understand that if a centrifugal clutch is engaged, it has to be slowed until the springs inside can pull in the clutch shoes.

I am choosing a roller drive and really like the BMP from the website & ads. Why did that rider have to put silicone in his though? That is not appealing.

The BMP channels went to bent steel but originally were made from 1/4" aluminum as Staton does, they are in fact a copy of the Staton design. The press fit on the bearings in aluminum was/is okay. I have both but I like the aluminum better, it's lighter and far easier to work if you have to drill additional holes. BMP has these kits made for them so the "laser" cut steel might be subject to tolerance differences from the job shops. The steel is more cost effective I'm sure and to be fair, BMP has lowered prices accordingly. When they started a couple of years ago the kits were $199.

The one-way rollers are a great idea but have suffered bearing failure, a few members here have reported the same problem. The 1 1/4" one-way rollers are surplus from a no longer in business Ebike maker which I believe was used on a 200 watt bike or in the neighborhood of 1/4 horsepower. Most if not all the ICE driven MBs put out substantially more power that that. They still work when they freeze up but just not in the freewheeling mode.
