This is newb question, sorry folks :)

When you hook up the chain to the motor it becomes tough to pedal. Is there something that allows the chain to rotate without having to engage the whole engine? Or is it just this way - like the old mopeds I remember as a kid?

Talking about a standard HT engine?...Yes, it's called a clutch. Pull on handle and press the pin down, release handle while pushing down on the pin. If the engine still turns, your clutch needs adjustment.

In the middle of a build now just have the motor mounted, sprocket on & chain on as well. No controls yet. Is there a way to check if the clutch is ok. Again a total newb, so not totally familiar with the way all the parts work.

Yes it will be a stiffer pedal even with the clutch in.....you are driving an extra chain and gear.....There is an alternative, I will post it when I find it again.

If you don't have the clutch cable hooked up, I feel you would have one heck of a time peddling. Remove the spark plug, peddle, if the clutch is engaged you will hear the compression coming out of the hole each time the piston passes TDC..... sorry top dead center. Something else can be done with the help of a friend...Take a pair of vice grips, grip the clutch arm at the pivot point so you will be able to turn it counter-clockwise towards the clutch itself. Have friend lift rear wheel and spin, it should be hard. Now rotate the clutch arm and turn the wheel again...should be a major difference. You can rotate the clutch arm with a "BOX" wrench also.

Thanks Al - was my first build -- now everything makes sense. Once someone posted clear instructions for me -- it was a breeze. Ready to gas it up and give it a try! I can see this getting addictive.

First ride post check: broken head stud!

Noticed some blow out oil residue near the top end fin after my first cruise. Also Looked like the top end cap also was not fitted with a gasket. One head stud bolt was freespinning! So now I have to get a gasket and 4 new head studs! Glad I checked it closely.
