I have just edited my reply totally, which initially was a bit whimsical as your bike did not fit my memory of the Merkel that much. Then I looked up a few pics of the Flying Merkel and your "version" in motorized bike is just AWESOME (so much for my memory)! You make my build look like a 5 year olds work and you really show the different between the casual no talent approach (mine) and the detailed talented approach (your Merkel). I think there is room for both of us in this type of endeavor (we all need to build, build, build) but I really appreciate what you put into the Merkel. Please send a picture when you get the tank painted. A beautiful, beautiful tribute MB. Put a video on youtube when you ride it. This quality of build really deserves a rider in vintage racing garb. I hope to use your bike as an inspiration to some of our volunteers as I would really like an example in our Kingsbury mix but it of course would not have your detail or workmanship....unless you moved down here or donated it once you get bored with it ;-)

Well, tonight after much gnashing of teeth, got the Chotaw running properly and not throwing the chain. I will be dressing it up a bit tommorrow down at the Kingsbury shop. It will probably be my last bike for a long time due to money constraints (and so many museum projects and anyways now it is time to build a scale FT 17 Tank. The interesting thing about this is now I am becoming knowledgable and unless some of my friends start making them, it will be lost. Of course this Choctaw nearly wore me out.

To build these bikes for sale requires a whole lot of infrastructure and talent to do them right. I can see why motored versions sell for around 2000 minimum, and I am guessing that unless one started an assembly line, and ran off 100 or so, that would only be the way to get the cost down significantly and even then one would have build the same bike to be cost effective. Maybe different paint but hardly no variety, that is if one wanted to sell them at a low price. Looks like for a while at least this is going to be a cottage industry, at least for the really cool 1910ish style bikes.

hoodoo those tanks are so cool i don't know a lot about them but they look good. when you say you are going to build one to scale do you mean you will build a full size replica will it run and drive?

We are talking a full scale working model, that is a replica on the outside and what it takes to get er done on the inside. I have a cuz that is very experienced with heavy machinery, welding, and heavy industrial supplies and loves to build stuff. It will be a tribute tank, it won't fool a thread counter but from 100 feet should get second looks even from them. It will be much, much lighter than the original and only capable of 5 MPH (pretty much the orginal speed of the tank) and will only be a flat ground runner...for show not for crushing cars. It will probably only be a one man tank, that is the guy standing in the turret will also drive it, the "driver" will be mostly just a passenger.

We are focusing on using the power from two golf carts. I have large scale drawings of the tank so external measurements are not a problem.

What man can conceive he can achieve. Now that my second motorized bike is done, I want to shift emphasis on the tank. The Tank has a home venue, Kingsbury so it will be part of the working collecting at the air fair but I can see popular at parades and events and I hope to use it for that.
