Hello all, my name is Dan, building my first motorized bike, actually, I test drove my bike for the first time a couple days ago in the desert, everything worked as it should, I have a bit of tweeking to do, but all in all, I am very impressed with this little motor kit (Grubee 66cc super rat).
I am building this bike for the Playa, I plan to take it to BurningMan with me this year. I am fabricating a K&N based air filtration system to handle the "powder like" playa dust, my main goals for this build are reliablility, and low noise. I am going to fabricate the exhaust myself, after test driving the bike a couple days ago, I came to the conclusion that I am happy with the stock silencer so I plan to use it in my fab'd exhaust...unless any of you could point me to a quiter muffler that doesn't restrict the engine to bad, that would be great :)
Here's a pic of the bike after I mounted the motor and fab'd the gas tank. If any of you know of any "need to know" issues or info about my engine setup, your expertees/knowledge is much appreciated, I've learned alot already while browsing old posts, thanks again!

Dan

Hi. Really the most inexpensive and good exaust setup is a Sick Bike Parts expansion chamber and the add-on muffler. Then the most predominate noise makers are the flat covers on the clutch and magneto and you can get dampener material from the sponsors in the sidebar, some even use glued on cardboard. Just something to stop the thin aluminum from resonating. Little chunks of rubber can be placed between the cooling fins to further quiet things down.

I like the tank, too. Just wished I could enlarge the photo for more detail :)

Nice man...

I am in Riverside.

Burning Man sounds great this year..Have fun:bowdown:

Animal, this is the first year the Borg is allowing motorized bicycles on the Playa, I can't wait to see all the "deep Playa" installations that I seem to miss do to the distances needed to travel to get to these "off the map" art pieces, should be fun! :)

Dave, an expansion chamber is definitely in my future, but I figured I would keep the stock exhaust on while doing the break in on the engine. I did purchase the quite kit when I ordered my engine kit, I took the three side covers off and installed the foil type sound deadener. I also ordered another sound deadener for the clutch side as well, its just a piece of cut plastic about as thick as a silver dollar, I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like it simply glues to the outside of the clutch cover.
I will update very soon with more pics, the gas tank i welded up works great and it really fits the frame well, looks very "steam punk", I like it. I'm also going to fashion the K&N air box ( and the chain guard as well) in the same style as the gas tank, then spray the tank, air box and chain guard with a clear coat to prevent rust. Here are a couple different pics...

Having problem uploading pics right now, will try again later.

Welcome to the addiction!
You have a pretty darned good start there. I like your "Steam Punk" fuel tank.
I am in San Diego too. I have wanted to go to Burning Man for years now.
Best of fortune to you on this journey!

Hello GearNut, well if you are one who has thought about going to the burn, always wanted to go, but just haven't gone for whatever reason, I say GO! I see you are an electrician and a mechanic? The mechanical engineering that goes into alot of the art installations on the Playa are mind blowing to say the least. Things you wouldn't even think possible, or wouldn't even think of in your wildest dreams are being built out there. It's like one big science fair. Let me know if you ever decide to make the Journey to Black Rock City, I put together a fairly big camp of mainly San Diego people every year, you're welcome to join us if you like.
So where do you ride here in San Diego? Do the police tent to hassles mb riders? I'd love to find out about some rides/gatherings. I plan to surprise my girl friend with a motor kit for her bike as well, she'll love these things.
Take care,
Dan

So far I just putt around my immediate neighborhood. I haven't gotten a Cali. plate for it yet.....yet.
I haven't gotten hassled yet, only one Sheriff has seen me riding and I did have a DOT half shell helmet on. No mirror, lights, plate..... not quite legal... but no hassle from him!
I do want to warn you though to stay far away from LaMesa. That city has an all out ban on MB's.

heheheh, I've been to the Black Rock Desert many times but not for the Burning Man..I go there to fly High Power rockets :D and I'm going again this September for a launch called XPRS. I have no idea if that means anything:rolleyes:
