Newbie, First bike, Old Scwhinn

Hello I am new to motored bikes, I am very interested, and excited to get started. My bike is a 1965? Schwinn Deluxe Typhoon 3spd. I plan to use a bikeberry 66cc Mega Motors Silver Bicycle Engine Kit. I am not positive but I think I might have to replace the rear wheel because of the 3spd hub? I will probably order my engine kit by the 10th of August. Anyone who thinks that I should go a different direction please speak up, any input on the 3spd rear wheel would be appreciated as well.

Hi Rudy,

No need to replace the 3 speed hub since that will be your backup (pedaling) if the engine quits and you'll have to pedal to start the engine. Most people use the rag joint sprocket on the left side of the rear wheel and keep the right sprocket to pedal the bike. Others buy a bolt on sprocket instead of using the rag joint. It makes it easier on the spokes. You have a nice Beach cruiser frame to work with. I have a 2 stroke on a Trek frame and now going for a 4 stroke on my 1955 Beach cruiser frame....Dan

Well thank you that is good news to hear! The rag joint sprocket is what comes with the kit right? Bolt on sprocket you say, were would I buy this, and how would I install it to left of my 3spd hub? Also do you think I will have engine mounting issues...because I do not want to drill my frame.

Pat sells them HERE 2/3rds scroll down and the 44 tooth sells for $85. Pirate Cycles sells them HERE a 32 tooth sprocket for $22.50. See which tooth sprocket comes in your kit. I would spend the time first n any paint and other things you might want to have before you buy the engine kit. Brakes? All you have is coaster brakes like me. I bought a front hub brake (has brake shoes like a motorcycle brake) from Amazon. The best hub is the Sturmey Archer hub and you can get the small (70mm) brake hub or the large (90mm) hub with a 6 volt dynahub for a few dollars more (less than $90). Then you need to take the front wheel to a bike shop to have the hub laced in the wheel. That will cost around $90 unless you take all your old spokes out and that will cut down on the price of lacing the wheel since they charge to un-lace the wheel.

Yes the rag joint comes with the kit. The sprocket bolts on to the left of your rear hub and on to the hub itself, not to the spokes. I don't think you would have engine mounting issues if your bike space area is the same or bigger than what the kit requires. When your looking at that picture of your new engine kit, scroll down to see the information block that tells you how much room you need.

Thanks for the info on the two different sprockets. I have front, and rear V brakes. I will replace wires and pads but they stop it good for now. When you say hub laced in the wheel what exactly does that mean? I had new tubes/tires put on the bike, and I converted the original headlamp to LED today. I have plenty of space just wondering if I will need additional spacers, custom mounts or just a U engine mounting bracket?

Don't worry about engine mounting issues; that frame couldn't be more perfect for the job.

I do wonder about the diameter of your rear hub and whether one of those aftermarket sprocket clamps would fit. I don't have any particular reason to think that it won't other than the fact that they made those hub clamps with different hubs in mind. You'd best ask the vendor exactly what size your hub should be to fit their product.

You've got a nice bike there. You ought to do just fine with it.

Alright great news! Should I order the U engine mounting bracket though? I greatly appreciate all the input, sending email to the vendor as soon as I post this, and ya I love this bike!
