As much as I enjoy riding OSCAR, I would like to acquire a small single-cylinder 4-stroke motorcycle, of 125-200 CC, with a 4-speed transmission and kick or electric starter, for riding on my rural back roads at speeds not over 30 MPH.

Do any of you have any recommendations?

There are times when I would prefer not to use pedal-power to start the engine and to get under way.

OSCAR will always remain dear to my heart, because he's a WHIZZER!

Thank You,

Look into California Custom Scooters. They build a 150cc, electric start, 5-speed bike that looks almost exactly like an early Mustang motorcycle. They will cruise at 60 plus and get about 90 mpg. They have a nice website and it should give you lots of info. I am not in any way connected to them, but I plan to buy one in the spring.

Under 30 MPH? YOU BET!

speeds under 30 really?

Hey Racie:

About 25 years ago, I was riding my bicycle with my daughter along the bank of a flood-control channel, when a Seagull suddenly rose up in front of me, causing me to swerve and lose control, causing a spill which resulted in facial bruises and a fractured forearm.

This occurred at an estimated speed of 15 MPH, and this is why I never ride OSCAR at over 25 MPH continuously, although I occasionally spurt up to 30 just for a few seconds, but quickly return to 25 or less, because I remember that spill a long time ago!

I don't like speeds on a 2-wheeled machine over 30 MPH, because I know what injuries can result from a spill at much lower speeds! This is why I never take OSCAR on a public highway, just on residential streets and rural backroads where there is no traffic.

That's it!

THANKS, ZO6-LITE!

Yeah, I remember the 3-speed Mustang Single scooter, and also the Powell and the Salisbury. They were popular with us high school kids in the early 1950's, although I never owned one.

I'll check out that California Custom Scooters website!

That California Custom Scooter company must not be interested in selling any of their scooters.

They do not give a Telephone Number.

They do not give Dealer Locations and Addresses.

They do not give an Email Address.

All they're apparently interested in doing is showing photos and videos of their Mustangs in action with their smiley riders.

Any of the Chinese CG Honda clones will do what you want superbly. They have the advantage of being tuned for load lugging at comparatively low rpm. In racing, when we had the standard cam, we could beat anyone off the line, it just ran out of wind early in the rev range.

But don't forget to change the oil that's in when you get one for real Western oil.

Where can I see one online?

Are they clones of the old Mustang scooter?

That California Custom Scooters outfit wants $3695 to $4595 for their Mustang creations...OUCH!!!

I'll try CraigsList before I spend that kind of jack!

There is a Cal. Custom Scooter on E Bay for $2450.00 if I remember correctly. It has almost no miles and has extra cost wheels, W/W tires and some more trim. It looks good from the photos.

HEY LUDWIG II,

I called the company that sells those Chinese Honda GC clones, and they say they are not permitted to be sold in California because they don't conform to our air pollution laws.

I was interested in their "Bobber" style 250cc bike...a real bare-bones hot-rod that just took me back to 1953!

I also called California Custom Scooters in LaVerne, California who custom-build recreations of the original 1940's Mustang, and they can offer me one for a few hundred off. I don't know.....especially when I bought a brand-new 2005 Whizzer for $1100!

There were some years when I spent $3000-$5000 on a new Telescope, but my wife thinks I gave up sickles a few years ago, and she would think I'm out of my mind to want another bike!
