bearing cup replacement?

Not true, where there's a will,...
He got one out, he needs a donor hub and some homemade tools as outlined in these posts.

It easier to buy a new wheel/hub, but you CAN replace the cups.

You've got me on that one. Removing and installing the cups are not the problems. It's locating quality replaceable cups. He still needs a donor hub or buy a used one for parts, but without examining it, you're taking chances.

I agree it's easier to buy a new hub/wheel, but some people can't afford to or for whatever personal reasons like the challenge.

you guys.... self appointed engineers and bike mechanics. prudently ignoring the facts here. im sure pigs can fly.....
Sublunacy, you sure do like being wrong A LOT, don't you?No pigs flying, facts in your face.I'd hate to be so stagnate in thinking as you.I'm sure the shops you worked at were full of superior snob "know it all's" who overcharged and laughed at those without your vast knowledge. As I said "YOU CAN BUY AND REPLACE CUPS" http://www.balcoindustries.com/bicycle-hub-cups.htm.
Sublunacy, just because you think you know something doesn't make it true,... get it?

thanks for all the help! the cups i'm looking for are 1 1/8". did you make an inquiry grinningremlin? i'd chip in a few dollars too if we can get a few more. big blue that is what i was thinking of doing just replace them with 1 1/8" cartridge bearings but my hub is coned so i cant fit any spacer in there! the centre is exactly the thickness of the axle could i still do it? and yes new stuff is out of the question cuz i'm super poor!

Buying cups in volume won't solve your problem because their are probably dozens of different cups due to different style of hubs. Without a picture, I couldn't say yeh or nay if spacers would work. A straight hollow hub shell would work the best, as shown in post #12.

thats true. what i'm saying is i cant fit any spacer in there! i'll put up a pic soon! do you know how the caged bearings work? do they run in a cup aswell or do they run on the cage?

a few pics

just noticed while uploading these pics that my ruler only has 12 marks per inch so that cup is actually 1 1/12" ! the third pic i have a spacer in there but one end would just pressed against the narrowing hub.

if that was a steel hub then its just garbagy stuff. jb weld the cups in and giver.... or replace w a aluminum hub. any name brand will do.

lastely those cups from india somebody pointed. its not that simple.

if you had even decent/entry level hubs-- if the cones damaged it is 110 percent user error. the hub i see is doomed and worth less than 10 dollars however. it is doomed to break while in transite somehow.

As I posted earlier (bike forums link), it can be done. His hub is pitted or damaged, he got one side out, a donor hub can be bought ebay style for $3 to $5 bucks. It's no different than the headset races.Pull the two cups, press them in, nothing to lose trying.Plus proving all the naysayers wrong.

And what style hub does he have? Front, rear, bendix, 3 speed, drum, Shimano, coaster, Campy, BMX, SRAM, etc. - we don't know. OP states he's going to get a picture.

As I stated earlier, every hub is different - hub cups aren't universal. On some hubs, the cups aren't removable.

I looked on Ebay, there ain't too many hubs for $3 to $5. OP is in the UK and shipping and customs would be prohibitive to ship from the US to the UK. I looked on UK Ebay and are very few inexpensive hubs.

Sure it is different than headset races. Hub cups come in different sizes where as headsets come in basically 2 sizes.

If he had a used bicycle parts supplier nearby or scrounge a flea market/swap meet, he might find a hub that matches his at a reasonable price.

I am not trying to prove anything other than trying to get the facts right and keep it in context relating to the OP. As stated by the OP, he doesn't have much money.
