Hi everyone.

This is the second time the rim has been bent on my 8 speed mountain bike. Did I not put the sprocket on properly? I'm so confused. What should I do?

If you're using the rag joint sprocket mount, switch to a manic mechanic sprocket adapter or a sick bike parts shift kit to avoid bending any more rims.

Get a good quality spoke wrench and practice the art of truing. When you tighten the sprocket bolts, it tensions the spokes on only one side of the rim, making it appear "bent" With a good eye and patience you can straighten it out. If you got a used bike or a cheap Wal-Mart type bike, the wheels probably needed truing up anyway, plus it will make your brakes work much better.

Sadly, that sprocket won't work with my bike. It's only for cruisers. How will a shift kit prevent bent rims?

A shift kit will let you get away with not mounting a sprocket on the rear wheel, but you'll be doing plenty of other mounting and fabricating, and spending lots of money. Also, multiple speeds are illegal in many states. If you live in an area with few big hills, you'll be fine with a single speed, and my opinion is that the fewer parts in the driveline, fewer potentional problems and breakdowns.
