Spookytooth Desert Rat Four Stroke

After the war BSA continued to make that bike as the Bantum, also Hearly Davidson brought it out as the Pacer, you can still find them, but they also changed it later to a swing arm and glide front end. I know where there is a Bantum with no engine. Have fun Dave

This is going to be the look I am going for, an old DKW 125.

Its not going to be a copy, I'm just going to add black fenders (maybe with pinstriping) and a old fashioned black bike headlight. If I can find a bigger tank that hangs over the top bar I will do that too. Anybody know a place to buy small motorcycle gas tanks?

Haven't heard from Spookytooth yet, hmmm

I think the DKW 125's have just the right look, even better than the old BMW's.

I saw your pics in the other forum
I am anxious to hear how roland's gearbox works
(whine - I wanna 4stroke !!! - end whine)
has the gear noise gone away? :?
that was the bad deal last generation of these guys :???:
please keep us informed :D

My primary disappointment about this 4 stroke, as if anyone cared  .

The primary is a dry case. Dang! They should have fitted a wet clutch and used oil to lube the gears. All these issues the Chinese are offering us were addressed in motorcycling back in the '30s~'60s. This is like reliving a classic past w/o the cla$$ic benefit. Sheesh!

The new ones are wet. I think if you check around, if I'm not mistaken you can put ATF in that case. I read that all your missing is the fill and drain plugs, the internals are the same, Don GruBee I think is the one that developed that gearbox, I have watched the evolution on the net. that engine is awesome but I don't like the looks. I'm waiting for a remake of the Flying Merkel engine. Have fun Dave

Desert Rat 4 Stroke

I got mine about 2 weeks ago. The frame is very nice - strong as an ox. The motor runs great but I had a little hiccup with the gearbox. I had it partially assembled and they did a great job. Contacted Roland and he's hooking me up with a 80cc 2 stroke next week.

My wet clutch won't disengage. Roland said it's a manufacturing glitch. I'm supposed to fedex the 4stroke back when I get my new motor but if I can figure out a way to make a go of it with a go-kart clutch and possible new or different gearbox I'm just gonna call Roland and ask how much I owe him for the replacement motor and hang onto both engines. If your having issues give him a call I know he was bustin his butt trying to get the gearbox thing figured out and that dude knows his stuff. He's allready answered a ton of ?'s for me.
I'm just dying now that I got my feet wet breakin in my first motor and have been sideline with a maint issue. My wife says I'm like a caged animal. I'm counting the seconds until my new motor shows up so I can get back on the road. On top of that a bunch of guys at work are using me as the guinee pig. Everyone wants to see how good my bike from them really is.
Besides the gearing issues - my Desert Rat is a great way to go- I'm all ready looking at bike #2. I either am gonna go with a triple tree on a Spooky setup with a fat chopper rear tire or go 180 degrees and do an agressive mtn bike ride with a 50cc from Staton. Either way I can see I need to have another bike sitting in the shadows in case of a breakdown.

Every morning I have to get in my minivan with a car seat I think I cry a little. I can't afford a Hog and now that I got a sweet set up from Roland and his guys I can't see myself on anything else. Just need to hit the lotto so I can get one of each of his bikes!!!

I am going with the 2 stroke now too. I would rather have the four stroke but the gearbox problems nixed that. I specced out all the stuff needed to make a DKW mini-replica. I'm gonna try to build a fiberglass tank that fits over the top bar like this:

Its actually "right" because DKW's were 2 strokers. The one pictured was 125cc.

*impatiently waiting*

I'm sure you must know but ebay is a good place to find old motorcycle gas tanks.
