Larry,
E-mail me a mailing address. I'll send the longer axel. Glad to hear you got a welder, it's goin to make your lif a lot easier. I ordered a teflon coated shifter cabl for the thmb shifter, should make shifting better. Also upgraded my apple juice tank to about one gal.

All common mountain bike rear derailleurs are "long cage". This refers to the distance between the 2 pulleys. The Short cage ones are on the old style road racing bikes with 2 BIG chainrings (42/52,54) and a "corncob pipe" on the rear (close gears)

Larry,
Funn thing, I just changed out my rear wheel on the five speed. I changed wheels because I also had a true running rag joint on my five speed setup, and wanted to save it for future use.
Well after I mounted it, seemed to be short on the cluster side(I had already offset the axel to the right side. I'm going to measure the old axle.
My derullier is mounted under the axle nut, perhaps I can mount it to the dropout flange.
If I have to make up a special axle I'll make two and sen you one.
I have been using standard brakes for one season, had no problems.
