Jackshaft is the only way to go even if you only have a single speed bike. The chainring that comes with the kit has a freewheel in the center that allows it spin without the pedals spinning. Be sure to buy the HD kit because the freewheel that comes with the standard kit is junk. Do a search this topic has been widely discussed.

It may be a stupid question but do you have brakes on your red barron bike? I don't see any disk or a drum brakes and I don't know how a shift kit could work with a coaster brake. Am I missing something?

Hi there. I was reading your reviews with the Townie and the GEBE setup. This is just what I am looking for. Can you answer a few questions for me?

Why didn't you get the multi gear Townie?
On the GEBE system, is there a clutch that needs to be depressed with starting up or coming to a stop?
How is the acceleration curve? Is there a certain speed where the torque really kicks in? Specifically, how is the torque when just starting?
How the the Townie feel at 25 - 35 mph?

      Thanks so much

      David
