I have been trying to rig up a gas powered engine on a bicycle until a friend gave me his old garage door opener with a 1/2 horsepower electric motor in it. Will 1/2 HP be enough or do I need far more than that? I will get pictures up in a few...

And think of the power requirements .
    120 volts RMS ac .
You will need hundreds of feet of extension cord.
Just to go around the block.

Or a DC to AC inverter...

Still... when you are a beginner I recommend the standard brushed motors... don't go off on a tangent unless you have a reason to.

I'm going to be experimenting with AC Induction motors for ebikes soon... so I'll be posting on this forum about it. (it's not going to be easy)

Stick with the gas engine. Easier and cheaper than electric power.

    Not necessarily arceeguy...;-)

I wouldn't bother with the garage door motor though buddy more trouble than it will inevitably be worth. Ifyou want to got lecky look at some of the Cyclone kits.
