Ack! I whacked my Robin Subaru

hi sabala

when it comes to the little primer button
in short time -- you will develop a feel -- of when it's just right

kind of reminds me of the birds and the bees here -- side tracked - sorry

when pushing the primer at first - it pumps very easy - not much or no gas inside
then we feel it tighten up - get's harder - there's gas in their now
not to over due it at this point -- we are loaded -- with gas
one or two more pumps at the most at this point - should do it

wow - early in the morning - kind of fun trying to explain that
got the old motor bike guy worked up
pardon me -- while I go and see if my wife is awake yet..

Mmm-hmm Mountainman, ok, sooooo I keep pumping and pumping away but the juices do not seem to be flowing...

I did get the gas into the hose, (hooked it to an eyedropper) and connected it back to carburetor but when pressing the primer, it will push the gas back down the hose and when I release the primer it does not suck it up.

I took the hose off carburetor, (with gas still in it up to 1/4" from the outer end) had the primer pushed in then connected the hose back to carburetor and then released the primer pump hoping to suck it up the rest of the way but I could see the gas in the hose not going anywhere.

Slowly pressing the primer pump only pushes the gas back down the tube into the tank.

That is what it is supposed to do

The clear hose is to return gas to the tank when you prime the carb
The black? ( other ) hose sucks the gas into the carb

Did you try starting it with half choke?
or
no choke?

hi - I had a lot of coffee this morning I see up above !!! I'll keep an eye on that.

anyway - trouble with the primer pump
not sure of your primer pump age
guessing fairly new

not sucking up the gas apparently ---

when older as with any rubber type parts - primer bubble may crack
causing it to lose suction - visual check - ok ?

where the bubble connects - usually 4 screws - if loose of seal - possible problem also
question -- are those 4 screws tight -- not to tight now - don't wish to strip

might not hurt to take that little baby off of there - some inspecting and cleaning

I hope that you understand -- just guessing here

Forbisher, thanks for the info, I didn't know exactly what hoses did what. I went through the manual and online R/S manuals but couldn't find that particular info. So, I should NOT have any gas in that yellow tube then?

Yes, I originally tried with choke 1/2 open, then fully open, then closed, no luck.

Mountainman, I guess you had a good start to your morning-I hope! Engine is brand new and unused, has never been run. Yesterday was the first time I put oil and gas in and tried to start. I'll try to fire up again and if nothing happens, inspect and maybe take stuff apart!

You also mentioned in another "no start" thread to put a little gas into where the spark plug is? Like take out the spark plug, put in a little gasoline where it, (sparkplug) goes then putting the plug back in? How much gas, a milliliter or more? Just trying to get all my options here...

Thanks all, I'll keep trying.

hi - ok -- it's never been run

sometimes just a little hard at first
after a little while of running -- first or second pull -- should start

at this point -- don't take anything apart -- it's new

when pushing that bulb -- give it a couple of firm pushes
not tinky winky -- we are pushing gas through the system

some strong pulls on the starter -- what's your book say about choke
up above it seemed like you did fine - with the choke
remembering -- to much choke may equal flooding

yes - pulling the plug
with a little time under our belts -- this can tell us much as you know
running too rich - lean --- that plug at times tells us a story

a little gas down that spark hole - shouldn't hurt anything
very little -- less than a teaspoon
be careful if this is your first time removing spark plug - not to strip threads
when putting it back in..

this may be better for now -- got a close friend who knows a little in regarding engins
might have them fire it up for the first time
because after the first time -- it's fun for a long time - sounds like this morning wooo

the main reason we add a little gas down the spark plug hole is --

if we get a slight firing of the engine -- we know it's a fuel problem - lack of

if that plug looks wet -- we probably have plenty of fuel

hope that you are up and running soon so you can -------

So, I was rechecking the online service manual...and realized...maybe it's good to check to see if the hoses are hooked up to where they are supposed to be. I saw the engine illustration where it talks about putting the engine back together and shows the breather and return pipe.

Apparently after hooking up my new air cleaner plate I had misplaced a couple hoses...

At least I know more about my engine now than I did yesterday!

Heading back outside...don't think I'll be back for awhile...I hope!
