My washing machine has a hard time going into the spin cycle. If I turn it on and off by putting my finger in the little spot where the sensor for the open and shut door thing is it will eventually make a big thud like a transmission being shifted into drive from neutral or something. Any ideas? The timer seems to be okay.

Thats funny. I have washer problems too. I have no spin or agitate.
I tried your finger in the hole method and my machine took off like a motor bike.
No, seriously. I pedal my bike down the road to start it and then ride it into the house and down the basement steps and then try to keep it going as I hook the drive belt around the back wheel. But when the washer goes into gear it always stalls the bike. Hellllppppppppp!!!

But seriously, here is a great forum for washer repair...

I read on a post either here or the other site that a guy got a 2 cycle engine out of a washing machine and powered his bike with it !

it sounds like the tranny is on the way out on your washer
when the trannys do the loud clunk THING -- not a good sign
switch on door sounds to be dirty also -- cleanning switch may help
