cutting headtube

Been great riding my shifter 49hs. But..id like to put some nice disc forks . I welded a bracket for rear disc..works great. Problem..nice forks are 11/8. Sooo, I'm thinking, slice the 1" headtube 3/4 off leaving enough to seat my 11/8 tube into and weld. Should be no problem with alignment. Right??? Don't have to go to the expense off, new frame,tearin it down just transplantin. Hey let me know. Ya know how I get on a one track thought process and miss the obvious.
