When I first opened the gear case to inspect/adjust the clutch, I noticed that there was a small gap around the "big gear" where I could see the red colored clutch shoes (as opposed to my other engine), and that there was some red dust already in the gear teeth...almost like they were old and dried out, and crumbling apart.

My first run I noticed no gear whine or squeaking but the clutch was slipping so I came home and tightened the acorn nut. Second run and I'm hearing this squeaking/whining that I've heard other people talk about. I opened the case and there's quite a bit more red shoe-dust.

Bad shoes from the beginning maybe? Clutch set too tight and rubbing on shoes causing the whining now? Should there be any play at all in the big gear? (Ie. should you be able to wiggle it in and out a little bit?)
