My most recent upgrade has been a new electrical system, but while in the process of cleaning out my carb (it's a RT carb with the throttle slide), I followed everyone's advice and changed to a smaller jet.

Before this change, I was having the typical 2 stroke problem: engine would start easily, do well at low RPMs, but bog down at WOT. Not good.

Now, with the new jet, this thing is a monster at WOT. Brappoliciousness! But it is hard to start. I have to pedal hard for about 20 yards with WOT, the motor will pop and eventually take over. But it takes a minimum of a quarter mile for the engine to get good fuel flow and rhythm.

It's hard work! I don't use choke to start - I've never had to until now. I'll have to do some testing with choke on. I don't think it will help.

But let me repeat: this re-jetted 2 stroke has a beautiful whine at 6k or so. It's quieter and has much less vibration. When in doubt, change your jet.
