I have been messing around with motors on bikes since 2002, electric and gas. The pusher on the Staton bike site was my idea that I dubbed the ABUV, or Auxiliary Bicycle Utility Vehicle, and one poster had it right, it was top heavy! http://www.staton-inc.com/Details.asp?ProductID=2729

Currently I am working with a friend on getting a cargo bike together using the drive system from that ABUV and hopefully mating it to a Nuvinci hub. I read the Nuvinci thread and it sounds like there are issues there but at least they are known to us. Especially the torque issue.
