horse power mods?

Spunout,

The picture on the right that you posted shows what I believe is the original mounting flange for the carburetor.
Correct?
Have you ever tried dispensing with the cork gasket and tried using a rubber o-ring to seal it?
It appears, from the casting, that its made for one.

yes to the flange-thing, and no to the o-ring. but thats an excellent idea. going thru some airleak problems right now, and thats probably the right answer. thanks

You're welcome.
BTW, no need for Permatex with the O-ring, but maybe a couple of little dabs of grease.
Will help hold it on during installation, and make it less likely to stick when pulling it off.
Any hardware or auto supply store should have an assortment to choose from.

May have originally taken a flat o-ring, too (looks like a rubber washer, like what seals the female end of a garden hose).
If that's the case, a round (tubular?) shaped O-ring may prove too thick to compress during installation.
In that case, if you've got a deft touch, you can shave a little off the ring, where it sees the head and the carb.
Work in "baby steps".

Depends on what you're looking for power wise. Put on two base gaskets will raise your powerband a bit. By raising the cylinder a bit, you're raising the timing of the motor a little. if you do that, ditch the head gasket and use permetex up there instead. That will give you back some of the lost compression. Even if you don't intend on putting in multiple base gaskets, more compression is a GREAT thing for 2 strokes. They already run silly bad compression ratios.

Mess with ignition timing. The stock timing is going to be very mild. advancing it may make the motor harder to start, but you'll see some power benifits as well.

Otherwise, short of a dremmel and some dedication, there's not a lot of "free" horsepower to be found.

max engine torque 6.2nm/5500rpms(4.57lbs/ft)

So what results has anyone got with 2 base gaskets.

Iv'e been running 2 .045 thk gaskets and it dont seem to run right.
