My first CUSTOM build

Ok, so I see everyone building their bike I figured I'd start my own build thread in hopes that I can get some good feedback and if anything ideas on where to go with everything. Here is a pic of the jig I setup and the bike sitting in roughly the place it will stand once done. This is a one off build and will be built with chromoly tubing, a pit bike engine, and a jackshaft assembly similar to what I have seen on the motopeds.com build and sickbikeparts jackshaft setup. What I have on order that should be here in a few days: exhaust, handle bars, sprockets for wheel and jack shaft, and disk brakes. What I have now: head tube, wheels and tires, engine, seat, track ends, throttle, carb, (air filter on order). What was custom made: the rear hub which is a dual disk rear from Phil Woods..This will give me disk brakes and bolt holes for the sprocket on either side of the hub. Tires are Hookworms and Halo SAS rims with a Halo Spin doctor from hub...using a Manitou Circus front fork(really stout little fork for the price)..Using a Cane Creek headset and the head tube is a 44mm 4130 tube from paragon machine works. Whats needed: tubing(measurments for tubing), 3/4" shaft for sprockets to ride on, a custom made bottom bracket or I might decide to go with SBP wide bottom bracket setup but not sure if will be wide enough for what I need(if anyone has exact measurements of how wide it is after pedals installed that would be awesome)

Now let me know your feedback..PLEASE!! 20131229_193439.jpg

ok..it's been awhile since my last post and I realized I needed a much better jig so things have changed.. unfortunately haven't had the time I would have liked until recently so hopefully this next week I will make a dent on this build. here is some pics and tomorrow I will have some head tube cones made and rear setup.20140307_2033002103856079.jpg20140307_203319-391139167.jpg20140307_2033261728934403.jpg

Ok, here is the head tube with the cones installed.

Update:

Ok, here is the basic jig with some foam tubing for sizing needs. Hopefully if all goes well by the end of the week I will have pics of the frame starting to take shape..that is my goal. If anyone wants videos of any of it let me know and I will do my best to get a video setup going of everything. Also, if anyone wants a video on how to make centering cones with a basic lathe let me know. I have seen people try and sell them for $75/pair and up. I made mine out of some Delrin and a little help from an old friend (81yr Old guy who knows his way around the shop) gave me an idea I didn't even think about. Worked out flawlessly. Can make them out of aluminum as well and can even make anyone who needs them for a small fee(material and shipping and a little beer money)20140309_212437.jpg20140309_212401.jpg

Just photos and description work fine for me, thanks. I'm not seriously thinking of doing anthing like this but it makes a very interesting thread to read so thanks, and keep posting updates. :) It looks great! :) :) :)

update

OK, here is the jig with the engine kind of mocked up..going to start bending tubing hopefully Thursday for testing..then once that is done the 4130 tubing will start getting done up. the one thing I am having trouble with is figuring the seat post out..well for another day..anybody have suggestions I'm all ears..I'm not set on anything in particular just want a nice looking ride for the end result

Looking good! :)
What engine is that? It looks a beast! :devilish:

I was assuming you'd have a pivot, through a tube mounted laterally, inside a bent plate "gusset" inside the front of that triangle at the top. Then the front of the seat rails (which you'd make or use aftermarket motorcycle parts) would attach to the pivot, and the rear of the rails would be mounted atop a spring (perhaps from a "full suspension" kids mountainbike), the bottom end of which would be fixed to mounting tabs at the rear of the triangle where the seatstays are joined to the toptube.

OK, little step back

Ok, so I've come a long way and have made little then big then little changes to get this right. a lot goes into making a frame from scratch especially when it is time to start bending and welding. I've contemplated buying a JD2 bender and the dies but just couldn't come to spending $300 on bender then another 500 for two dies or get a shop to bend the tubes and notch amd weld it up since I also dont have a tig welder. So, then it came to start looking at shops and cost for what each shop would charge and can they actually do what I want them to do. Well after talking with five different shops and discussing what they want or need, almost all came back with one thing..More information. Some said yeah I can do this or that or I dont have this die but I can do it this way..so I decided to go back to what I initially did..make a CAD drawing and get it even closer to the specs and then have the exact measurements printed out. I even came across a small flaw I couldn't really get right because I didn't make the jig to hold a tire in it but it will definitely help in the end. ok OK enough talking.. I made a full size template to scale and I was able to get my seat tube closer to what I was trying to do by eye on the jig. I was also able to see a small error I would not have seen without mocking it to scale.. so here it is..this also helps any shop mock the tube exactly to what it needs to be with no guessing. It also knocks the price down because the shop isn't guessing on tube size or lengths. What do you guys think?

I think it looks terrific! :D
I love the "proper" bicycle seat tube so that it's properly adjustable.
I love the "proper" mountainbike fork.
I love the "proper" brakes.
I love that you're using "proper" wheelset: Halo SAS 36mm that's what I'm getting!
and Mmmm Hookworms, j'adore!!
I'm green with envy that you have this stuff to play with! Your bike's gonna be "sick".

The bike is at the shop now. I am dealing with a custom fab shop and we are working out all the details a bit more. Hopefully by next week he will have the front triangle together and I will have pics up. He is pretty busy and so am I now that my wife is pregnant so I've had to push a few things back. My ultimate goal is to have the build finished sometime in May. Probably not all painted but built and drivable by then.
