Scooterguy Mount With Tanaka 47R Engine

I can sense that the rear wheel and cassette are protesting and MIGHT be a problem. It has OEM spokes back there, while the front wheel is HD with 12g spokes.

A spare HD Staton rear wheel with 14gauge SS spokes and brand new 8-speed cassette will be installed. Its gearing varies greatly with what is on the bike now. Here are the differences, with engine rpm/mph at 5000rpm and 10000rpm:

1st gear - same at 32-tooth, gear ratio = 41.64:1....10.2mph @ 5000rpm/18.6mph @ 10000rpm

2nd gear - 28t - 36.45:1...10.6mph/21.2mph(now at 33.84:1/12.6mph/22.9mph)

3rd gear - 24t - 31.24:1...12.4mph/24.8mph(now at 27.33:1/15.6/28.3mph)

4th gear - 21t - 27.34:1...14.1/28.3(now at 23.43:1/18.2/33mph)

5th gear - 19t - 24.73:1...15.6/31.3mph(now at 20.83:1/20.4/37.1mph)

6th gear - 17t - 22.13:1...17.5/35mph(now at 18.22:1/23.3/42.5mph)

7th gear - 15t -19.53:1...19.8/39.6mph(now at 15.62:1/27.2/49.5mph)

8th gear -13t -16.92:1...22.9/45.7mph(now at 14.32:1/29.7/54mph

HYPOTHETICALLY, in 8th gear, rpms can be increased to the GP460 engine's maximum peak hp at 11000rpm to increase speed to 50.3mph.

Gear ratio is much closer and more even. This engine should REALLY do well with this cassette!

A metal spoke guard was installed on the HD wheel, which actually has 12g spokes. The derailleur, cable and bike chain are being replaced "for good of service". The chain had jammed between chainring and BB yesterday. It took some coaxing to reset it.

The HD wheel has a solid axle; hopefully it's not a problem replacing the QR axle.

Doh! The Staton wheel with13/t32t cassette won't fit my Diamondback bike, which has dual disc brakes. The Staton wheel does not have disc brake hub, uses a rear v-brake. So the new 13t/32t cassette is not usable.

The derailleur's hold down screw was worn and its cable was frayed. I installed a Deore rear derailleur and matching shift lever and cable. While at The Bike Shop, a 32-spoke Specialized wheelset was purchased, along with 11t/25t cassette. There is a great ratio difference which I'll compare with my existing cassette.

Geesh, it is always something! Sounds like you are getting it there, looking forward to a group ride soon, it has been to long my friend!

New Cassette Gear Ratios

Gear ratio comparisons between original 11t-32t cassette and the new 11t-25t gears:

1st gear - 25-tooth, gear ratio = 32.54:1...11.9mph @ 5,000rpm/23.8mph @ 10,000rpm(now @ 41.64:1...10.2mph @ 5000rpm/18.6mph @ 10000rpm)

2nd gear - 23t = 29.94:1...12.9mph/25.8mph(now at 33.84:1/11.4mph/22.9mph)

3rd gear...21t = 27.33:1...14.1mph/28.3mph(same as old cassette)

4th gear...18t = 23.43:1....16.5mph/33mph(same as old)

5th gear...17t = 22.13:1...17.5mph/35mph(now at 20.83:1/20.4mph/37.1mph)

6th gear...15t = 19.52:1/19.8mph/39.6mph(now at 18.22:1/23.3mph/42.5mph)

7th gear...13t = 16.92:1/22.9mph/45.7mph(now at 15.62:1/27.2mph/49.5mph)

8th gear...11t = 14.32:1/29.7mph/54mph(same as old cassette)

This new cassette gets rid of the old super granny gear of 41.64:1. The new first gear is almost identical to the original 2nd gear. Third and fourth gear are identical, as is 8th gear. :geek:

That means a softer launch in first, close-ratio selections throughout and the same final drive.

The proof will be in the ride. It SHOULD work better than the original cassette. If it doesn't, it'll be simple enough to find another gear selection.

On to the assembly!:giggle:

All components assembled, so I did a test run on the flat stretch of road nearby. It was hard to determine the differences, because I made so many changes simultaenously. The exhaust tubing and muffler were extended 18" to keep oil splatter away from clothing and moving parts. I tried to replace the ADA S1 pipe with engine-specific Dominator pipe. However, the reversed piston/cylinder caused the Dom pipe not to clear the flywheel aluminum housing. I will replace the p/cylin its proper location with a Trevor Simpson headkit I have on the shelf. Should be good for more hp and torque, and the Dominator pipe should fit.

The 460 engine seemed strong, started on the first pull, idled well. The higher first gear was like the original 2nd gear, which is still pretty low at 29.94:1. The gear ratios were very close, so there was not that solid yank whien the bike tries to throw you like a bucking bronco. The steep hill that conquered my 460 engine/friction drive is a nonissue now. I like to ride up that hill at 25mph, instead of blazing at full rpms. It'll be easier to traverse with the Trevor Simpson headkit.

I'll give myself a few more days to critique the new cassette.

Just when all was going well, the new bike chain broke while pulling away easily from the light. Not too bad, it was only a quarter-mile's walk home. The original bike chain was cleaned up, its tight links loosened and refitted to the bike.

On this morning's commute, all went well, but I was taking it easy. Methinks I'll carry a new chain and chainbreaker in my tool bag in my hydration backpack. My tool bag is a "green" recycled food bag from the local market. I'm surprised it's lasted so long, carrying all my tools in it.

After work, I ride to my community college nearby. Then my son will pick me and my bike in the van tonight and take me home. I don't commute at night...too dangerous with bad roads and cars.

I hope the kids at the college don't mess with my bike.

Hawaii Ed, I'm ready to cruise this weekend!

Unfortunately, my good friend Pickettblanco could not join us because his Staton box took a dump :( He did take a four wheel transport though :)

We met up with 5-7, and did a little tweaking on the bike, then just cruised around the neighborhood some. The 460 is blowing a lot of smoke, not sure if it is too rich, or too much oil? :-/

I tried getting a vid, but the batt died in the cam jsut as I started it!

Here are some pics!

Hey Ed,

Thanks for taking pics AND adjusting my Jump Stop. My bike chain must jumped 5 times in a half mile, before Ed fixed it.

27 holes were drilled into the air cleaner for more airflow. The "bonnet" completely hides the holes, also keeps rain out and vandals from pouring soda into the engine.

Said "bonnet" is actually a 7-oz tuna can.:giggle:

That's my $5.95 aluminum fuel bottle I bought on ebay. It holds 18oz.:geek:

And my 99-cent boost bottle from the same place.

An allen bolt secures the tank's cap to prevent anyone from contaminating the fuel. The same allen wrench adjusts the mirrors and resides in the handlebar grip, along with a small screwdriver used for carb adjustments.

While my friend Rick awaits repairs on his twin-engine gearbox, I'm selling him this 460 engine. That way he can use it with his other Staton chaindrive gearbox and cruise with Hawaii Ed and me. I have another GP460 engine to drop in.
