Hi yall,

I finally got around to installing mushroom lifters in my 2005 NE, and surprisingly, the cam didn't come out with the side cover this time. Didn't think much of it, but, when it went back on too easy, I figured something was wrong.

Upon inspection, I discovered that the area that the cam bearing slides into was pretty chewed up, like the bearing had been spinning in the cover. I felt around in the crankcase and sure enough, it was filled with aluminum shavings.
The bore for the bearing is now egg shaped, allowing lateral movement of the cam.

I checked the bearing, and it is nice and smooth with no play and spun pretty easy. The bearing feels fine.
So, why did it spin in the cover?

I've already ordered another cover, but, I'd like to find out why it happened so that I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

p.s.
To add insult to injury, I cut the back of my hand trying to get the cover off, then stripped one of the cover bolt holes putting it back on. I'm starting to think this bike is evil ! :devil2:
