Vintage Whizzer Motor Piston Rings

Hi all. I have a question on piston rings for the vintage motors. I pulled apart a vintage J motor and found someone used 3 compression rings instead of 2 compression ring and 1 oil ring. How important is it to use 3 compression rings and is there an advantage or disadvantage in doing so. Thanks up front.
