Exhaust Blew the exhaust gasket today...

gasket tip

I to had lots of trouble with the exhaust gasket. Two strokes get very very hot. Much hotter than 4 strokes. I found that even the high temp gasket sealer gave out way too soon. My solution was to cut and drill a gasket from a small piece of soft sheet aluminum. This worked great.

Hey Vongould,
How thick was the aluminum and did it seal it match flame tight?
I wonder if copper would work the same?

aluminum gasket

I am not sure how thick it is. A bought it at Ace Hardware, it was just a small sheet (maube 4inches x 8 inches). It has sealed pefectly without any gasket sealer. Copper would probably work just might be harder to cut and shape.

I wonder if a few thicknesses of aluminum foil as used for lining baking pans would work the same? Would be a cheap alternative if it works.

interesting topic.. I have had some issues with my exhaust gasket also.

The one that came with the kit, fell apart pretty quickly.

I purchased some gasket material "cork/rubber" from autostore.. The material is soft but does not hold up well under the heat of the exhaust.

I also cut out some cardboard but that didnt work. so, I just purchased some RTV Ultra Copper Silicone Gasket stuff. It is nice because its liquid and goes on evenly.. but, will it hold up? the temp says up to 700degrees.

Reading the thread above makes me wonder if it will work. I may need to try the aluminum sheet gasket mentioned above.

(( its raining out today, but tomorrow i will find out if RTV worked on exhaust ))

Anyone have other methods and ideas for exhaust gaskets? if so let us know ;)

Ye the stock exhaust gaskets should be illegal, they dont last at all. Before i fitted my new pipe I made a gasket out of copper sheet and used gasket sealant on the flange. This worked but still spluttered oil quite a bit, wouldnt recommend it

my gasket blew a week ago. now I use cardboard as i dont have replacement, but a bit of oil gets out. also had the bolts come out twice, so had to twist a bit of wire to try to stop them popping when it gets hot.

what do you mean by twist a bit of wire? because I alsways get problems with the bolts vibrating out too.

I found I had problems with exhaust gaskets going all the time until I secured my muffler to the frame with a metal strap (i think its a large pipe clamp) since I used that and some auto exhaust gasket material it's been fine ever since. I think my sparkplug leaks more oil than the exhaust manifold now :)

I finally got around to putting gasket sealant (permatex 1A) on both sides of the thin cardboard gasket & putting the exhaust back on. Sad part is that I forgot to let it dry & I went riding almost immediately afterward. Don't think it'll be a real problem, but we'll see.

I haven't had problems with my exhaust bolts vibrating out yet, but some thread locker should do the trick. I bought the red stuff yesterday, but my friend says that stuff is TOO strong. I'll prolly be going back today to switch out for the blue (medium strength).
