Gas Cap Gauge..Anyone have one working?

Hello all,
I was pondering the idea of putting a gas gauge on my bike. Our motors get really really good gas mileage so why put a gauge on it? I tend to forget to check the fuel level in the tank before I go ride and half way thru it I run out of gas, mainly because I rode to work and back on the bike for 3 or 4 days and now I have hardly any left. If I had a gauge to glance at before riding, then I could stop running out of gas.
I have seen these gas cap gauges for lawntractors and have wondered if they might work, however the lock and seal might not be the same as the stock gas tank that comes with our engine kits. Anyone have any ideas?

I've seen a few of them.....as you mentioned mainly for lawn mowers...The Cap is plastic with screw on threads to the tank....NOT a direct replacement for the HT gas tank....

Also, they are pretty "tall" from the top to the tip on the bottom where the float rides....way taller than the HT gas tanks.

Hope this helps.

I have one from an old victa mower, circa 1970, that uses a passive fuel gauge - uses a stepped perspex sight, and you see darkness where there is fuel, and light where there isn't. Shaped like a christmas tree upside down in the tank, with the 'trunk' through the fuel cap.

Another option is to get a Tachometer that has resettable "hours run" meter. Run it for however long and find out how many hours of normal use you can run before needing to fill up.

Not very precise, but if every time you filled up you reset the timer than you might have a better idea.

Another idea is to have a small reserve tank... mount it under your gas tank.

Many motorcycles have a petcock that not only have an on and off switch like ours, but have a reserve setting as well.

When you run out of gas on your main tank you simply switch the petcock to Reserve and you can use the reserve tank to get you to the gas station or home.

I always just checked the tank everytime before riding it.

Something like that would be *perfect* for the rackmount GEBE type engines where you have to contort yourself to get a glimpse of fuel levels... do you have a link for the one in the pic?

Just get a small fuel container that can be mounted in a bottle holder on your bike. The fuel should be sufficient to get the average rider back home or to a nearest gas station on a daily commute

I already do that - 2 250ml wine bottles and a long range 750ml one. it would just be nice to be able to turn my head to see whats in the tank - not crunch my spine as I have to do now

Gas cap with fuel gauge

I did find a 5 inch one at this link:
http://www.pressureparts.com/Pressure-Part-125-260.aspx
But our tanks would need one the is roughly 3 inch max length. Might be able to cut one down a little but the fuel indication would be off. A possibility.

some use this method on our large outside water tanks -- country living

a small clear plastic tube
could use a T running a line up side of tank or ??

then just a glance at the tube -- tells right where the gas level is ??
