I got my staton with eho35. Been having a lot of fun with it. I have noticed 2 problems. After pulling a long hill at full throttle it will stumble or miss. I let off the throttle for a few seconds and the stumble goes away. I thought maybe vacuum so I removed the fuel cap and repeated and it stumbled again. Any thoughts?
I have fuel in my oil. I smelled fuel on the dipstick so I stuck a lighter to it and it flashed. Im going to change to synthetic since my break in is over. What would be causes of fuel in the oil on a new engine. I know on new two strokes they are jetted rich but I dont have any experience with little 4 strokes.

fuel in oil

I also suspect fuel in the oil of my new RS 35. It was getting a slight dark discoloration within the first 3 tanks. It seemed to be running rich with a little sputtering at idle. I'm at 5,000ft altitude. I pulled the aircleaner and found and removed a thick paper element under the foam element. This allowed smoother idle and more response through the rpm range. But it still appears I'm collecting a bit of fuel in the oil. Anyone know of smaller jets or other way to lean out these carbs?

your answer will soon be on it's way.

I thought about removing the thick paper element from my carb and just using the foam - because - it's getting a little wet with gas - but - left it in there for now.. I did cut down on the amount of primes used.

The paper element had a tiny bit of fuel on it. I brought the bike inside last night and took the oil cap off. I might be delusional but I thought that the fuel would evaporate out of the oil. Ill check in a bit and see if it worked.

Hey BigDaddyT -- might just want to start over with some new oil - keeping an eye on it. It's not common to be having gas go into the gear oil - unless - possible broken or didn't seat right RING ?? Ride That Thing - Mountainman

Yeah in my 3 dozen vehicles only one had fuel in the oil and the carb was straight dumping fuel in the intake and straight washed out the rings. Fuel in the oil is very detrimental to engine life.

oil chg

Yea, I'm changing my oil before more rides to see what's happening. Thanks Mtn Man for the Subaru contact. I want info on jetting.

Never heard nor seen a weed-eater owner concerned about break-ins.

I've been religious about break-ins my entire internal combustion career but also had a motor seize mid air to my detriment (tapered bore) so must confess to being a bit jaded at this point - I just want to ride.

Yeah im surprised not to see more infoz on break ins and such on here. I rode about 8 miles today then changed my oil. I have about 10 hours in it in all. I tried flipping it upside down to drain the oil and that was inneffective. Protip:I had a friend come hold the oil catch bucket, i locked up the front brake and stood the bike straight up and it drained awesome. I put mobil 1 full synthetic in after a dino oil break in.

I did notice something when I added oil for the initial break in. It seemed that there was more oil in there than I originally added. I immediately suspected fuel getting past the rings so I kept a very close eye on it since.

Id say my first gallon got me about 120 miles. I was hoping for more but I live between the mountains and the ocean so its pretty hilly.

Lord I thought it might be just me. After gently running-in the EHO35 engine with only about 2-3 hours total time, I checked the oil and smelled gas. The oil had browned so I changed it (10-30 conventional). I took the small container of used oil in bright sunlight and I could see the sparkle of micro metal bits suspended in it. Yeah and it smelled of fuel.

Refilling the oil I screwed up and spilled a good deal of the new oil. Grrrrrr. I mean we're only talking about 100ml of oil to begin with.
So....I drained the engine again and started over. Interesting that this new, clean oil I drained out had a little puddle of sludgy dark bits in it. Maybe my screw-up actually had a benefit as it acted like a flush.

I have a left side rack mount so I just hook a rachet strap over a joist in the shop and to the head tube and hoist the bike vertical. Gets all the oil out.

BTW, the engine seems to be running fine. Don't like fuel in the oil though....maybe just part of break-in?

Yeah, me either...however they are not asked to pull a (in my case) 200 lb. rider and chromoly MTB.

I've got an old Briggs and Stratton powered lawn mower somebody gave me, used it all summer and from the looks of it I don't think the oil has ever been change. Runs great.
