After over an hour of searching and reading threads I couldn't come up with the answers that might be real simple.

Did what I thought was a careful install, Staton 1" friction drive, Robin engine on a 26" MTB frame and put 2 to 3 hours on the set-up so far.

Questions:

I've got a rythmic droning at mid-range rpms, pronounced if I hold the throttle steady, kind of a light vibration that disappears with more throttle. I also don't hear it at low rpms, just a certain range in the middle. Is that normal?

Also, I'd like to ask you friction drive users how much "scrub dust" from the tire do you get after a ride? If I ride for 15 or 20 minutes, I get a fine black dust on the back of the engine, enough to where I rag it down, particularly near the oil fill. Normal?

Thanks for any help.

Vibration is a part of these beast, just make sure you have enough tension on the roller. Hold the bike and go WOT, roller should not spin.

One thing to remember when referring to noises & vibrations ; You are riding a bicycle that was never intended to have a motor & be under so much stress & strain. A good solid Cruiser type bike works better than others, in my opinion. Knobby mountain bike tires are awful on these,,, switch over to a much smoother 1 1/2" city tire.
Tire dust/wear is mostly the users fault. Over-revving to where drive roller slips on the tire, revving when stopped where it may slip, riding in the rain & over-revving causing slippage , all can lead to premature tire wear. The motors are to change the bikes into " motor assisted " bikes rather than motorcycles. Pedal to start off,,, slowly accelerate ,, don't over-rev,,, pedal assist,, & give slow throttle in the rain && uphills, & you will get a lot of use out of a tire. A tire will " dry rot " on me before wearing out.

That pronounced droneing that you are hearing that goes away under throttle may be just the clutch chattering. While under throttle the clutch fully engages, ergo, no chattering. It will break-in after awhile.

Thanks for the input guys, I know many here have 'been there-done that'.

Esteban: As I read through your tips. all good, I can say I've pretty carefully observed then all. I'm using a MTB frame but a pretty non-aggressive commuter crossover type tire. No over-reving, ease on the throttle and pedal assist taking off and on any hills. I've been going easy on the set-up, especially because it's new and I'm trying to break-in the engine well. I've also been paying close attention to tire inflation and spindle pressure on the tire.

Been pretty careful so far, with the install and break-in, and I guess that's why I'm asking what you guys have found normal and know if I'm doing something different.

Hi Happy Valley -- well - I also have some strange sound coming from my engine at times - trying to locate - may also - just be the clutch ? My engine makes more noise when under load - up hills and at the start.. I have not noticed any extra dust on the rear end - as we know a little is normal - if it's tire rubber dust - it would seem that you either are not set tight enough- roller -- wrong or cheap tire ? I am thinking that with some more riding and a little time - you will figure it out. As ones above have stated - that smooth no noise ride is not always the common.. One more thing that I wish to mention - don't sweat it too much - these little engines are PROVEN TOUGH !! Ride That Thing - Mountainman

Droning most likely clutch wear-in but, check wheel true (in all directions) also.

Dust--always present. Even after only a short ride. Mine is a greyish formulation tho--not so much black.

ZevO,
Don't know why it took me so long to put together (your avatar) but I gotta ask...Did you serve at the Can Tho Air Base?
