I've been lurking these forums for the past month or so, and I must thank you guys for all the problems you've already gotten me through with my bike!

i have a late 2007 Whizzer NE5. Been riding out here at the beach, sunset, avenues, and Golden Gate park. I've seen 2 stroke bikes around here too. Definitely getting more popular around here!!!

Hello Keelhauler and sk8terpunk,

I'm a former SF bike messenger (early 80s). Yesterday morning I heard a story on NPR saying that that industry is shrinking. It's a pity. A great life for a young single with no dependants. I have a lot of very fond memories of bicycling and motorcycling around the city and the bay. And I'm glad to hear that MBs are becoming more common there. Though I might be a bit shy about motorizing under such crowded conditions. Still, the cities are the most likely place to see less autos and more alternatives as a reaction to high fuel prices. You might have a golden age starting.

Best of luck to both of you.

hey bluegoatwoods, the bike messenger industry took a hit with the dot com crash. people no longer use couriers when they can send everything via e-mail. Zeitgeist, however, still lives on (the bike messenger bar with the great outdoor patio -- not sure if it was around when you were here). I have actually been wondering if they would even let me take my bike into the back (patio) because it has a motor on it. I'd much prefer it on the patio where I can watch it than locked to a post on Valencia and Duboce (where I can't keep an eye on it). I live out at Ocean Beach/Sunset/Avenues/GG Park/SFSU area. This is the only area I have been riding so far. While I do plan to drive to the Haight and Lower Haight (cutting through the park to get there) and possibly the Mission, I have not yet done so. I am certainly not motorbiking on Market Street and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Just so you know, not only has the bike messenger industry died, bicycle fatalities are up big time in SF. One of the worst areas is on Divisidero (specifically Fell and Lincoln where they cross Divis.). I also saw a bike get creamed by a car on Stanyan (it was the bicyclists fault ... he was screaming down Stanyan at 2 am and ran a red light - he just slammed right into a car). This is not a good city for bikes. It is a small city and it should be more bike friendly than it is, but ... I've heard that they are making serious, dedicated (i.e. separated/divided) bike lines throughout Seattle now. I think in this type of congestion, it would be the only way to remain truly safe. For me, if/when I do go down into the City (even though I technically live "in" the City) it will only be on the side streets.

Good to meet you Two Walks! There are motorbikes everywhere!
