Hi, I'm Matt. I'm in Tucson, AZ. It's hot.

I found this forum when trouble shooting my 4 stroke, joined up to explain my issue and I hope someone has an idea what is wrong.

I'll just jump in. I'll post it in the proper section too. My 4 stroke (china) ran fine, but then sat for 3 months. I've stripped down the carb and cleaned every nook and cranny but it only idles with the choke on and the second i turn the choke off, it revs up and dies within seconds.

It's driving me mad. I can't for the life of me figure out whats wrong.

The spark plug is good and gapped correctly
There are no air leaks between carb and engine
Wires are all connected correctly (kill switch etc)
New gasoline, 92 octane
gas cap is vented correctly
black hose from air intake is connected with the engine block
Air/fuel screw is currently at 2 1/4 turns out
New oil in sump

If I leave the choke on it will idle for ever, the second I take it off it revs up, tries to take off and dies. WHY!?!?!!

Help me.

welcome

I seem to hear a lot about -- those floats needing adjustment at times ??

just a guess
usually a float -- just keeps doing it's job
but noted -- this may be one weak spot with these engins ??

Check the main jet in the carb for gummed up old fuel. May need to blast it with compressed air.

Done that. No effect

sounds like you my be starving for gas ????

Opposite. The bowl is full, I'm wondering if it could be two much fuel.

The bowl is full. When I took off the carb it full. I was surprised how much gasoline was actually in the little sucker, it just kept pouring out.

Plus, it wouldn't explain why the engine "revs" suddenly before it dies. It doesn't make any sense to me. It really revs, if it's sitting under it's own weight it spins the tire enough to burnout a little and try to take off.

the reving is caused by a lean condition. you said no air leaks. i say yes air leaks. spray starter fluid at carb connections and base gasket and around the head bolts.

I've dressed all the gaskets and checked for any air leaks and I can't find any between the carb connections.

base gasket and around the head bolts.

que? What base gasket? Are the head bolts the 4 securing the valve cover?
