Has anyone heard of a Spitz Solex motor it is a friction type motor for a bike. Any information will be appreciated approx. price ,relibility ect

I just picked up a motor that has been called a "TAS Spitz" motor. Marketed by Sears and others in the 70s. Also known as a TAS Spitz, Bike Bug, Free Spirit, or Aqua Bug. Its a 22cc -2stroke, bolts on any bike's front forks. Check out this site. http://bikebug.net/

The solex is a 49cc piston deflector type engine that dates from somewhere about the early 1940s or so..

They are pretty reliable and in france have been modded considerably into 'rat bikes' - everything removed that could be for faster speed.

They are alot harder to tune than the schneurle ported engines of similar periods such as the Villiers Junior and Junior Deluxe.

They sound alot more like old bikes than the modern high speed engines do, so I guess you take your choice. Although it might be possible that you could replace the deflector engine with a schneurle motor - although it would take a lot of machining.

They are also friction drives - which means slippage in wet conditions..

Thanks to all who replied. I'm thinking about buying a never used Taz Spitz motor Solex but can't decided on it or spend a little more and get a Stanton which would be new rather than a much older motor without a guarentee?
I'm thinking new rather than old but also thinking about the difference in $$?

From a performance standpoint, you'll be happier with the Staton.

The Staton, yes, no question in my opinion. You'll spend more time riding and less time tinkering with new vs used.

I have never heard of a Taz Spitz motor Solex...Taz Spitz,,, & Solex are similar in design but 2 different motors. Check out the 2 websites provided to identify.
